Vent about giving checks

Why don't people BRING THEM TO THE BANK???

We sent a check for an early May wedding- hasn't been cashed.

We gave a check for a funeral in May- hasn't been cashed.

We gave a check for a birthday in early June- hasn't been cashed.

I have a couple of checks for about a month now - reason I don't go - is who has time to go to the bank with a 1 year old to open a bank account Chat Icon

That's me....I'm so bad. I like to cash them after I've written the TY note so sometimes that takes a bit of time.

That makes me nutty. I know I don't always run to the bank when I get a check but I am conscious of the fact that it messes people up a bit and try to get there with in a week.

Re: Vent about giving checks

I get frustrated when people do that to me too so now I make sure I cash mine in a timely manner.

I HATE that!!!

Most banks have drive thrus and you can go to the ATMs at all hours of the night!

I give cash most of the time now as gifts rather than checks because I got so annoyed at having cehcks outstanding for so long!! Chat Icon

I know what you mean, but what's the difference though? You write a check, and that money is technically no longer in the account. It shouldn't mess your system up because you've deducted the money. Chat Icon

I'm considering just giving a gift ITEM from now one to the "repeat offenders". I don't like the idea of giving cash because it could get lost/stolen.

But, obviously checks don't work for certain people in my life. No more money for them!

And, I'm not going to say anything because I have in the past and they STILL hold on to checks forever. So, that's it- they get "stuff" as gifts from now on! Chat Icon

b/c If you don't go by a check book sheet- like me - I just go by what my online balance shows- it can mess you up-

I want to close that checking account and open up a new one at a different bank.

IMO, it's not unreasonable for me to expect a check that I wrote monthS ago to be cashed by now.

I'm not directing my frustration at you- I'm directing it the situation.

OH, that's a great idea!!! Of course, it will be a gift card to a store that's convenient to me and not necessarily them.

I agree with both of you. yes, it's annoying but I always have enough money in the bank to cover stuff like this. It never makes an impact on how I balance the checking account.

The money is there. But, I want to change banks and now I have to wait. Or, just close it and let those checks bounce. Which, in all honesty, I'm considering doing.

ah, I get it... You didn't mention that you were closing that account in your OP. I'd be pi$$ed off, too!

And no, it's not unreasonable for these people to have cashed the checks by now. Are they independently wealthy or something? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Only because this has been discussed with 2 of the 3 offenders, I'd be willing to pay the fees. Their shock would be worth it to me.

I'm not going to make a move yet because of the check we gave for the funeral. Those are great people who just went through a tragedy and they certainly don't deserve to hear my sh!t about being concerned about my check.

But, once that check is cashed, the other two are SOL.
