Tuesday's Gossip

It wouldn't be a "Desperate Housewives" production without some behind-the-scenes bitching, now would it?

Cast loyalties became clear at Eva Longoria's over-the-top French wedding to NBA star Tony Parker. And the subject of the sniping was Teri Hatcher.

Some didn't like that Hatcher commissioned an outfit from Badgley Mischka that was very similar to the bridesmaids' dresses, by the same designers.

And she was called a "diva" for using the church, St. Germain l'Auxerroix, as a photo op.

"A private walkway was set up so that as the celebrities exited the bus from the hotel, they could sneak through the fans and paparazzi," says one guest. "Felicity [Huffman] and Nicollette [Sheridan] walked into the church hand in hand, but Teri took her daughter and walked around into the public area to pose for photos and wave to fans for 10 minutes."

Says a snitch: "It was so strange! Everyone else was so excited to be going into the church for the wedding, and all of a sudden, Teri broke away from the group to make sure she was seen and photographed."

Other celeb attendees included Jessica Alba, Ryan Seacrest, Terrence Howard and Huffman's hubby, William H. Macy.

So why are the gals so mean about Teri?

"All the other girls are very close friends and hang out in each others' trailers and even at their homes," says an on-set source. "But Teri never joins in the fun and chat sessions and often runs late for scenes, and causes awkwardness on set."

Jane magazine, the iconic glossy that had enjoyed a cult following among independent, twentysomething women, abruptly closed yesterday.
"We have come to believe that the magazine will not fulfill our long-term business expectations," Conde Nast president and CEO Charles H. Townsend said in a statement.

Founder Jane Pratt, who was forced out two years ago, told us yesterday: "It's an interesting and sad day. The general idea of me leaving and bringing a fresh team in was simply not executed successfully. I would have loved to have stayed on and helped select a new staff that could further the basic vision of the magazine."

Pratt will host a call-in about the mag on her Sirius radio show today at 1 p.m.

"Creating Jane was fantastic, and I had a magical team of people with me," she told us. "We even had fun at 3 a.m. eating takeout and writing cover lines! You can see what happens when I leave."

Jay-Z and Beyoncé partied hard at Stereo-by-the-Shore in Southampton last week, drinking P.I.N.K. vodka straight out of the bottle. "Beyoncé said she didn't mind - she didn't want to wait for a glass," says a witness.

ALEC Baldwin is bracing himself for a new nightmare - a certifiable turkey of a movie he produced, directed and starred in years ago, but thought would never be released, is on its way to theaters this week.

And the incendiary actor is trying to do some 11th-hour damage control, begging his fans to steer clear of what he's calling an "unrecognizable film."

"The Devil and Daniel Webster," originally shot in early 2001, has been retitled "Shortcut to Happiness" and will open in six cities this Friday the 13th - despite the fact, as Page Six reported several years ago, it's "said to be so bad it is unreleasable." Baldwin's only consolation is that distributor Yari Film Group has yanked his name as director and producer, replacing it with the bizarre pseudonym "Harry Kirkpatrick."

Baldwin based his PG-13 comedy-drama on the 1937 Stephen Vincent Benet short story about a down-and-out writer who sells his soul to the devil to achieve fame and then hires a lawyer to break the deal. He assembled a big-name cast to co-star with him, including Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kim Cattrall, Dan Aykroyd and Jason Patric.

But his directing and producing credits were removed by the producers soon after the picture wrapped because they didn't like what they saw, and they recut it into a straight comedy. The film was also mired in legal problems when federal probers went after two of its investors for bank fraud. For good measure, Baldwin was sued by one of his producing partners over her cut.

Hollywood-elsewhere.com's Jeffrey Wells, who broke the news of the movie's upcoming release, called it "one of the biggest train wrecks of all time," adding that New York and L.A. critics won't likely get the chance to review it since it's only opening in Las Vegas, Rochester, Fort Myers, Columbus, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, ahead of a DVD release.

Last night, Baldwin was doing his own pre-release spin. "Alec doesn't recommend unrecognizable films to his fans," a pal of the star told us. "This is not an Alec Baldwin film. He's in the movie but he has nothing to do with it. His name was taken off as producer and director six years ago, but he couldn't get it taken off as an actor."

PARIS Hilton seems to be up to her old tricks again. Although she told Larry King she'd never done drugs, the newly spiritual heirhead emerged from an SUV in front of Hollywood club Teddy's the other night in what witnesses describe as a cloud of marijuana smoke. "She took a huge puff off of a joint, then opened the door and exhaled the pot smoke basically in my face," one clubgoer told us. At least she wasn't driving. Hilton's camp didn't get back to us.
