Re: am i the only one?

I am proud to be both but I know what you mean about Americans being "different". Like with pregnancy, which is practically all thats on my mind lately, overseas it all seems less pressured to eat 100% the right thing and with how anal we are with TV programs and all.

Definitely proud of BOTH.
I can't really see separating the two, NY is in America and is a very stereotypical "American" type of place to live.

Actually, I would have to disagree. I don't think NY, and especially not NYC, is stereotypical of America. If that were the case, then NYC would not be the special place that it is. If you've ever been around the country you'll see that there is no other place like NYC. And judging by the 2004 US Presidential election, this State definitely does not fall within the stereotype...or we wouldn't have Little Bush in office right now!

I don't feel that this is a very true statement. I dont' think that NY is representative of the lifestyles and sentiments of many other areas of this (vast) country, especially outside of larger cities.

I can almost see what she means, in that I don't agree with a lot of what is going on with the Evangelical "movement" that seems to be sweeping our country, but with all the bad is all the good. and everything that we have and could take for granted (as some DO) is owed to all those that preceded us.

I am not always proud of the actions of a few, but I am proud of what our country IDEALISTICALLY represents. Maybe someday we'll get there in deed, as we have always so eloquently expressed in word.

I'm proud to be both. IMO, one of the nice things about living in America is that we don't have to publically agree with our government, and we still can live our lives the way we want, without fear of reprisals.

I am proud to be American. I have no problem telling people - when I travel - where I am from.

If someone looks down on me because of my country of origin, then THEY ought to be shamed.

Re: am i the only one?

I'm proud of being a new yorker (even if I do live in Philly now).

I'm proud to be an American, but not proud of the direction this Country seems to be turning, some of the ideologies we stand for, as a country (through our elected representatives) and definitely NOT proud of some of the people we've elected, and the ensuing international chaos

Re: am i the only one?

I don't really feel one way or another about being a NYer - maybe cause I am from LI.

But I totally agree that I am embarrassed to be an American most of the time. The government's actions, our president, the way we are always in everyone's business (meanwhile there is so much in our own country that needs fixing) plus the general apathy towards the environment (Kyoto protocall) are so disheartening.

Yes, there is the typical home grown American from the bread basket, but most do not think of the farmers when you say "America"

Actually, it's funny you say that, a few years back I was in Turin, Italy to watch a football (soccer) match between Italy and England. As I was about to enter the gates to the stadium, the Carabinieri checked my passport and said to me, "Where are you from, Wisconsin?" And we all got a big laugh about it. I guess they thought the word 'Wisconsin' sounded quite silly, which it does. In any case, people DO know about places other than NYC.

I think they were just being funny. I was actually surprised that they'd even heard of Wisconsin considering how many adults living in this country can't even point out the USA on a world map.

that is just TRULY pathetic! and is it amazing when these same ignorant people form opinions about places they have never been to? UGH! My mother is oustading in this capacity! she's been to a handful of states and always says bad things about places she has NEVER been to! it is SO annoying Chat Icon

No matter how you feel about who is the spokesperson for the country. Whether you are pro war anti war, are republican/democrat/independant, there is no denying this is the GREATEST country in the world.

I am proud to be an American

I've been gone from NY for so long I don't really consider myself a NYer and I don't think I was ever proud to be one. I always wanted to leave NY and when I did I never wanted to go back.
As far as being an American I don't know really how I feel. Indifferent maybe? Chat Icon

I am proud of both. Am I proud of some of the things our elected officials have done? No, but as an individual I would rather live here than anywhere else.

Re: am i the only one?

I am proud to be an american and from Ny... Yes things are crazy here in the USA like gas prices, oil, food prices, clothes prices, We should be lucky to have all of this stuff because there are some unfortunate people in this world who wish they could have the thing's we have. Yes there is a lot of controversy and hatred and a war going on because No one can get along, maybe if people would try and understand one another instead of judging them by their nationality, color, and fight over oil and etc this world would be a better place....Yes? but overall with what goes on in this world again I will say it...I am proud to be an AMERICAN & from New York!Peace out
