If you were going to treat yourself...

For doing something that is hard for you to do, but will better yourself, what would you?

Background:

Over the years, I've gotten out of driving a lot because DH always drives. I've gotten to the point where I get nervous to drive alone even to places very close by, and I hate it.

So I said to my DH that for the entire month of July, I will do 100% of our in-state driving (going to Boston July 4th, so the 16 hours would be a bit much for me).

I'm hoping that by doing ALL of our driving, it will cease to be a big deal to me, and I'll eventually feel comfortable again.

Now, this is hard for me, so I need an incentive, or reward. I have enough purses (even though I love them!), and we just came back from a weekend away, so any other ideas?

What is something you really really want but really really don't need?

I have a personal goal and when I reach it my reward is between getting my hair professionally straightened or a costly scrapbooking tool.

I have to think, because I want clothes, but I also need clothes. So that is functional. I also have to set myself a price, because I want a flat screen TV, but they are too Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i would ask for a complete spa package

please let me know how your month goes! I really really need to do this! I have the same problem, FH loves to drive so I have NEVER ( okay once) driven on a highway and I have been driving for 8 years. . . it is so restricting!

I really need to just tell him that i HAVE to drive the next time we have to go somewhere but he likes to get places as fast as possible so he always lets me out of it

good luck!!

I do drive, but my DH is almost always present, and the times I drive alone is when I take him to the airport for a work trip. I'm always so nervous a day beforehand because I know I have to drive. I drove somewhere alone today, and it wasn't bad, but I was so nervous beforehand and that isn't good.

In your case, I would start by driving on the highway sometimes when your DH is in the car, and start to get comfortable again. I'm sure most of next month I'll drive with my DH in the car, and just a few times I'll drive alone when I want to get a pedi or have to run errands on my own

ETA: I misread your post. I thought you hadn't driven in 8 years

What about something like GPS or satellite radio for the car? To make driving less stressful or more enjoyable?

Good luck with your goal! I had a hard time driving for a while and it is liberating to regain the comfort of driving. Chat Icon

We have GPS and I love the fact that I'm not worried about getting lost anymore. Its just pure driving that makes me nervous (changing lanes, merging on the highway, etc). I guess it doesn't help that last month we got hit by someone that fell asleep at the wheel Chat Icon

All depends what you are into and how much of a treat.

A treat for me would be a new camera lens or a new laptop.

New clothes/shoes would be next.

Re: If you were going to treat yourself...

the feeling of independence would be enough for me. i hate being scared of anything - face your fear head on and just know it will be worth it in the end.

and than i would drive to the mall and buy whatever makes me happy - but make sure you drive there alone.

Re: If you were going to treat yourself...

An over night trip???? A new purse that you take when you drive by yourself to remind you of what you did? New seat covers or a new ipod? What about something you can use in the car? A further incentive to continue driving on your own???
