Reading to your babies

Who else reads to their little growing tykes?

I got the Dr. Seuss' "Oh Baby the Places You'll Go!" and my little boy loves it! He is usually jumpy after dinner time and after I read the book to him he calms down and relaxes...my husband and I get a kick out of it...I need to get more books bc I will soon be able recite this one from my memory!

I do! I'm just reading the same book over and over ... I should probably add a little variety as well. Chat Icon

Re: Reading to your babies

I would love to start this. I think it's great!

I read somewhere that the baby can't hear it's surroundings until about 6 months. Do you how true this is?

Re: Reading to your babies

I believe their hearing is not developed to about 6 months & although they say it recognizes its mom's/dad's voices, sounds a bit impossible lying in fluid and through tummy walls. Yet I still read to my peanut also.

Wow, you guys are good. I had a hard enough time motivating to read to my DD when she was 6 months old and just wanted to chew on the books!

Re: Reading to your babies

These are a few really good ones if you are looking for more, that your baby will enjoy once he/she is born:

The Baby Goes Beep
I Kissed the Baby
Counting Kisses
I Like it When...
Peekaboo Morning
Mama Cat Has 3 Kittens (anything by Denise Fleming is good)

I used to do storytimes for babies, and these worked really well. They don't have much in the way of storyline or plot, but babies love them.

I'm not reading yet myself. The baby is too young to hear anything, but I probably will in the next couple months.

I normally read math stuff Chat Icon . I am still too nervous to bring baby-stuff (including books) into the house.

You know what Sylvia, I am willing to be it is the cadence by which you read or the meter of the verse in the book that actually calms YOU down and thus your baby probably enjoys how YOU feel. Rhyming helps also. I think reading to and with your children is so important.

Re: Reading to your babies

DH actually does more reading to the baby than I do. But I tell her stories more often about how her cousins can't wait to see and meet her.

Her cousins have read their favorite books to my belly also so doodlebug will be familiar with their voices too (and the smile on these kids faces are just too precious!)
