Cord Blood Banking

DH and I just recently began talking about this again while in the waiting room at the Dr's yesterday, and then the Dr. was actually asking if we had considered it, he really thinks it's important if you can afford it. He related it to an insurance policy that you hope you never use, but have if you need it.

Anyone decide definitely yes or definitely no yet?

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We did not do it with either of our 2 children and do not plan to do it this time. Its expensive and the chances of us ever needing it are so super slim that its not something I am worried about.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We've gone 'round and 'round about this one. Yes- it's an insurance policy I suppose- BUT there is no guarantee that your child's cord blood will even be a match to anyone in your family. If we decide to NOT bank privately, we WILL be donating to the public registry.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We didn't do it with DS (who is now 5), but did with DD (2), when it became more popular and the possibilites for use became greater. My sister has multiple sclerosis, and there is a very real possibility that DD's cord blood will help cure her one day. Even if there were a tiny glimmer of hope, it would be worth it to me.

We are not going to do this. But it is definitely a personal choice for everyone!

Good luck with your decision!!!

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We had a long talk about it the other night and ultimately decided to do it.

We felt like if the time came that we needed to use it and didn't we would really regret not banking it.

We are doing it.

We have a history of diabetes and heart disease in our families and my brother died of Leukemia. I know it's not a guarantee, but god forbid something happens and the cord blood could have helped, i would never forgive myself.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

I just posted about this the other day -- the possibilities are not great that we will need it, but what if we do?? And really, who knows what problems having access to your baby's own cord blood may solve in the FUTURE? This is such a new and quickly growing field that today it might not save your baby's life but 5 years from now it may.

$1500 plus $150 a year.....you spend that on clothes and toys, which will NOT save your baby's life, and they will outgrow anyway Chat Icon
