I am not sure what causes it, but i have read they get hiccups to strengthen their lungs and diaphram, kinda practicing for breathing.

I think its from swallowing amniotic fluid... not sure though so don't quote me!

I just asked my OB yesterday...because my  has them EVERYDAY and it is getting annoying! He said they swallow amniotic fluid and pee it out and that is how more is made...that's pretty gross!
