and we figure for an 1100 sq ft house the taxes that we pay are just too high....

Re: NORTHPORT

Prices for houses in Northport and E. Northport and a bit high. Commack is very high with high taxes.

Elwood would be the cheapest of all.

Prices for Northport/E. Northport are a bit higher for the exact same house/same size lot as Commack and Elwood but the taxes can be almost 20% less, again for the same house. That is largely due to the presence of LIPA.

Northport and Commack schools are rated very close to the top in Suffolk county. They have an IB program at the high school as well as great vocational programs (they really service all types of students).

While the prices of the houses in Elwood are a bit cheaper, the taxes are probably the highest of all because Elwood has the least amount of commercial real estate. A comparable house in Elwood would be about 20% higher in taxes than Northport. Elwood is also a much smaller district than Northport.

We have family/friends that live in all three districts.

Re: NORTHPORT

Taxes are high in Elwood, higher than Northport School District and comparable to Commack.

all three districts are very good

It depends what you are looking for in a school - Elwood is smaller district, High School & Middle School on same campus

Commack and Northport/Enorthport are bigger

We actually found that the exact same house in the Elwood district cost way more than Northport or Commack. We ended up buying in Commack. All are great districts.

I think some use St. Pauls (?!) as a full time kindergarten option...its on vernon valley just over the tracks.

Re: NORTHPORT

Many others use Trinity regional school for full-day kindergarten.

There are so many stay at home moms in Northport, and so much of it is an affluent area, that most likely full-day kindergarten will not be instituted.

We have the same thing in the district I teach in. Most of the moms are not full-time professionals so the community does not want to spend the money providing full-day kindergarten.

IMO, they should provide at least SOME full day kindergarten classes. It's just not practical anymore not to have them.
