Question for those who make less than their SO's...

Do you feel like you need to do more around the house, cooking, cleaning, etc? In other words, do you feel that since you're not contributing as much to the household monetarily that you need to 'make up for it'?

(I've actually wanted to ask this question for a while but kept forgetting and this seemed like a perfect opportunity.)

although i am making more
My Dh does not feel he needs to do more around the house...
that is because i think he feels he should be doing more to earn more money to make up for it....which is why he is ALWAYS doing OT

I should answer my own question!

I do. I definitely tend to do a lot more of the cooking, cleaning, general housestuff because I feel guilty about not making more. I don't have the option of OT or anything like that to up my salary to match DH's and I feel terrible about that Chat Icon

I guess I was just wondering if other people feel the same way Chat Icon

For us I don't see it as much as a monetary thing but a time thing... My job isn't very stressful and I have VERY good hours. Though I will make less and probably contribute more around the house I think its because I am home earlier and less tired from work that I am able to contribute more.

I actually do do more around the house because I'm home more...he's working 2 jobs and comes home at 10pm or later if he is closing. We had agreed that inside was my domain and outside was his, but if we need help, we ask.

no, I don;t feel like I have to make up for it. We don't differentiate our money anymore and it's just the way it is. He helps out equally. I may not make as much but I still work just as hard.

DH sees it this way too (although he's not complaining about all the cooking and cleaning Chat Icon). I work about 30 min less a day than he does but have a longer commute so I guess we're out of the house about the same time.

I guess it's just in my nature - I always feel like I need to be the go-to for everything, be it $, house stuff so maybe it's better that I make less, it's at least my 'excuse' for doing it all.

Rebecca - I'm becoming a 'house wife' of sorts as well. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I like it to an extent but I just don't want to be resentful of it later, like I'm fully expected to do this stuff.

Lenners - I do more, because it's in my nature too. I cannot just sit still, but I make sure that DH does his fair share also and he never complains about laundry, cooking, cleaning.
We have a cleaning lady once per week so it alliviates any major issues we would normally have. He's pretty good with upkeep and daily tasks.
I too didn't want it to become I was the housewife (which is a full time job) in addition to my full time job. We both work hard, therefore, we both have to work around the house.

Re: Question for those who make less than their SO's...

I end up doing more of the housework, becaues I'm home more... plus, if I do don't it, it either doesn't get done, or doesn't get done RIGHT! Chat Icon lol

Honestly, we're both kinda old-fashioned, with a modern twist. I cook, he washes the dishes, I clean, he throws out the garbage... etc.
But he definitely makes more $, especially when because he gets OT (I'm on salary, and I hate it!).

I feel the same way, but I don't do more. Chat Icon
He usually does the laundry & grocery shopping before I get home.

I work later, have a longer commute & make less. I often tell DH thay I feel I am not contributing enough.

Re: Question for those who make less than their SO's...

I used to feel that I needed to pick up the slack b/c I make less than DH...and if I were to attempt to make up the difference, I'd have to work more than a ton of OT - he makes almost triple my salary Chat Icon

But we both definitely feel more like Elbee and we contribute equally in our own ways.

I never thought of it that way because of money but I do 99% of the housework because he works more hours, in turn, makes more $

No. Actually, since getting his new job, he makes more than me AND works less hours... so he ends up doing more around the house.

I see it the same way- I bring in more money but DH works three full days a week (people, teaching college is where it's at!) so I admit, I do expect him to do more around the house, and he does.
