Rockland County

We are looking to hopefully buy a house within the next year and are considering either NJ or Rockland.

Can anyone suggest areas in Rockland to consider and ones to definitely stay away from?

Also, how is the commuter into the city?

Thanks.

Re: Rockland County

I live in Rockland, in Pearl River, and commute to the city every day. I take the train into Hoboken and then take the PATH across since I work downtown. I take an express train (there's only one in each direction) and it takes me about an hour and 15 minutes door to door. There are a lot of express trains out of Suffern.

There are also busses that go down into Port Authority or busses you can take into Westchester to catch Metro-North out of Tarrytown.

I find it's an easier commute from areas such as Pearl River, Nanuet and Suffern. The areas to stay away from is Spring Valley and Central Nyack and the school district to stay away from is E. Ramapo (which incorporates Spring Valley, Chestnut Ridge and part of Nanuet).

You can get great deals in Northern Rockland, Stony Pt, Pomona, Congers, etc. but, the commute into NYC is a little tougher!

Thanks for the info.

I have been looking on realtor.com and saw some beautiful houses in Pearl River? If you don't mind me asking - how are the taxes?

I work on the east side and work nights (I'm a nurse). Do you think it would be crazy to drive in?

Re: Rockland County

my friend bought in Nanuet - she likes it - she commutes to Queens - its about a 45 minute drive - she is a NYC cop, so she doesnt drive during rush hour.

Its a very nice neighborhood - i think her taxes/home price was comparable to LI.

Re: Rockland County

we have friends in Nanuet and it's really a beautiful, very woodsy area! (off Hemstead Road off the Palisades - they are actually selling and buying a bigger house a mile away)

I'm always so amazed how close it is to the GWB - so driving may be an option - but parking is another issue to think about.

She grew up in New City, but she won't go back there, b/c of the schools (E Ramapo - like the PP mentioned).

One definite benefit is having NJ close for gas and shopping, plus Palisades mall is one of the biggest in the country!
