Rent
Right now our gorgeous/spacious luxury 2 bdrm/2 bath apt. rent is going up to 1650- (from 1398 )
We recently just looked at 3 bdrm townhomes(with garages)- they were gorgeous, and even bigger than where we are now...
Depending on the model/upgrades and whether is was a lower or upper unit the prices ranged from 1820-1975-
You are getting alot more- but the prices still seem so high to me! Just curious to see what everyones going rate is...

We have a upper one bedroom apt that we have until March. We pay, including heat and water is $1200/month. It's nice. The two bedroom units in our complex are around $1500 or so.
ETA: this is in PJS

Re: Rent
question and my advice, for that kind of money, would you consider buying? It just seems that the amount you are spending in rent is relative to the amount spent on a mortage. We are buying a 2 bedroom condo and our monthly mortage payments are going to be $1536 and that's in Holbrook putting 10% down with a seller's consession.

We are still considering buying... BUT w/ buying we are either looking at being able to afford the mort. but not the taxes, or we can afford both- but if god forbid something goes wrong... we will have no extra $$ to fix it... KWIM?
We have seen a few condos that would make our mortg. about that price, and either the area wasnt nice, or it wasnt enough bedrooms... and so on...
Where exactly in Holbrook are you moving too? Im local to that area....
I guess DH just likes the idea- of if somethings broke- we dont have to fix it, and his other concern is being able to resell... (hmmm- I guess I start a new thread for my next question...)

When I rented we were paying $950 (included utilities) for a 1000 sq ft, first floor apartment with fireplace, attic storage and use of the yard and the washer/dryer in the basement.

yeppers. We are moving to Woodgate Village in Holbrook and we found a 2 bedroom ranch for 272K. The 3 bedrooms start at 300K and go up, but as far as resale goes, no problem there. They do sell fast! I know we've been intrested in Woodgate for a while and units we loved were sold before we even got a chance to resee them.
You will never see all that money you put into renting again.
As for repairs, if you are in a complex most exterior stuff is done for you (ie roof, parking lots, etc).

I was going to ask the same thing. I've seen some very attractively priced co-ops and maybe condos. (Then again, I've seen some very expensive ones too.)
My rent in long beach for a one-bedroom, oceanview apartment with parking space was $1275.

So ridiculous. My mortgage, taxes, home owners AND utilities are under $1,500 AND I own a home!!!!
didn't you buy it from family before the market went nuts?
let's compare apples to apples for once
I rent a lux 1 bedroom apartment, waterview, doorman, pool, gym, and electric included for $1850- in bayside- so you are also paying for location
to buy the same apartment it would be $375K- same unit, same building, same everything
to buy a house I would want in an area that makes sense in terms of work, friends etc- would be $600K plus
so for me- it's cheaper to rent right now- yes I know I could buy a house in suffolk for less- but it's not worth it to me or my husband to spend our life in the car- he already works till 9pm most nights and I work in CT
we are renting for 1 last year to wait out the market- and I am very happy we did it- it was our choice and while I can't wait to buy a house- so many things in our life have changed since we almost bought at the peak of the market 2.5 years ago- that I am very happy we waited- b/c the location we would have picked would not have worked right now

I read one of the posts above and thought how nice it would be to live in an affordable place somewhere like Holbrook, but then remembered that the trade off is that DH and I would never be home! I don't like the LIRR enough to spend two hours a day on it.

sometimes you have to make sacrifices... its true by going more east you will have a longer commute, but you will be able to afford more. Its all in what is more important to you. For some its a shorter commute, for others its more house/land, etc.
honestly, I was living in queens (astoria) for the past 8 months, and I didn't find the commute so wonderful. I worked about 5 miles from my apartment and my commute was over 45 minutes. On a bad day it would be over an hour. To go to Holbrook (ronkonkoma train express 1 hr) - I would be travelling 60 miles and my commute would be half an hour more than it was from queens. I don't think thats such a bad trade off.

Re: Rent
we pay $1866 plus all utilities for a two bedroom. (includes a $25 per month pet rent)
Just like Beth...we rented for a while because we knew we wanted certain areas and even though our rent was high, we were still able to save a lot. Now we are able to buy the house we want in the area we want. If we would have purchased a few years ago, we would have definately compromised on location or home.
I hate when people say that we are wasting our money on rent. How can it be a waste if we need someplace to live? It's all relative I suppose. But for us, to be able to by the house we want now, is a lot better than some friends of ours who are "house poor" now because they did not want to "waste money" on rent for two years. Sorry to digress from the topic...

I understand that but we we bought we were making half of what we do now. Just like when my parents bought our house, they were making pratically nothing compared today. As the price of houses go up, so does the salaries. If we had the salaries we had now then, we would have been able to buy a much larger house.

the salaries on LI have not kept pace with the housing prices

No, I understand that by seeing how much people are making on this board alone, that is why they are able to buy the $400,000 and up houses. We were only able to get 1x our salary for our house when we bought and that was just the amount we had after our down payment. We made NOTHING when we first got married and I am not joking-lol!! People today getting married (which I know people get married later now) make alot more than we did.
