Nuchal Translucence Test

Is anyone - or was anyone petrified of taking this test. I am so scared of really bad results coming back.

After this test - what are the other major things that we are tested for?

I know that it does no good to stress but I feel like a weight will be lifted off my back once I take the test and hopefully get back positive results!

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

usually--the nuchal fold test, combined with genetic history and afp blood test is all calculated together and odds are given,.
I had only the nuchal fold and went no further--I did meet with a genetic counselor and felt better too.
For us..I was only doing that because if God forbid there was a problem I would be prepared..my doc said if there is downs or such lining up a heart doc helps and so on,.
I also felt..if I didn't do something I would be wonder the whole pregnancy and on the delivery table.
I was happy I did it--my odds went drastically down with the fold test.
I didn't have the afp because the high risk said too many false positives so if I wasen't going to do anything about it if there was a problem let it go.
This is not the case with everyone-multiples make higher false positives but singletons have them also.
If u want a idea--then do the test--if u will never do anything about bad results stop there and refuse a amnio if u want. They can't make u do anything.
Stressing stinks--bottom line is whatever is just is and avoiding any possible test doesn't change the result--its all up to u.. and chances are they are fine results---but..nothing is 100% so sometimes it is still stressful.
even someone with great odds can be the odd # where there is a issue.
It comes down to u and how u feell u will handle it.
I really never knew--I was just scheduled for a sono at high risk and they just did it--i dk if I would have otherwise.

I was nervous too but not just for the test...I had myself worked up about all sorts of things...none of which I will share with you at this time! Chat Icon

Try to focus on the positives...you are going to get to see your munchkin and this time you get to see him/her for a long time cause they have to get a bunch of images. You get pictures too!!!

When we went for ours the baby wasn't really moving and I started getting scared but in a split second it kicked it's feet and started sucking it's thumb. Chat Icon The tech said it was sleeping which totally blew my mind because I thought the baby slept when I did and was awake when I was...nope. Chat Icon Then when the doc came in for the final measurement and to talk to me...the baby turned it's back towards us. DH laughed....crazy me scanned the spin. Chat Icon The doc bounced my tummy and the baby moved back so we could see the neck.

So try to focus on seeing the baby...everything else will work out just fine. Your age puts you at a lower risk right off the bat.

It's all goo

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

Honestly...DR. H said we had a choice and I TOLD MYSELF over and over not to care "what the results were" because its just a screening tool...and I thought it would be a great chance for a detailed sono to see the baby

Not sure if you saw my post but ours was yesterday and I wish I hadnt done it Chat Icon

Im so so worried about the results, even though the Dr said that its likely the baby is fine, when he said the skin fold measured thick, I almost threw up in the office and I dont know how Im gonna fully relax for a while.

I do know I read a TON of Girls experiences though on here and most people loved the detailed sono and had no bad results.

So I guess most girls have a good experience with it.

I didnt get the blood results back yet.

Next would be the AFP ( further genetic testing) at around 18 weeks ....

We are opting not to have it done because the false positives are SO high. I couldnt handle it.

After that its the level 2 sono which measures bone structure, length, brain stem and spine etc of the baby.

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

Donna - I did see your post and I KNOW everything will be just fine with your baby. And, that's the thing - when talking about other people's children - and the odds of how many healthy babies are out there I am convinced they are ok. When I think about my own - my craziness just takes over and I think "It could be me"

Pregnancy is really scary. I thought I would be able to enjoy it more - but I really feel like there is always something to worry about. First (well, I guess always) you worry about miscarrying. Then you worry about all of these tests and the results they will bring in. THEN you even have to worry about false positives, then you pray for a good delivery and that everything goes ok. I guess I'm just sad because I thought I would be a really glowing, happy pregnant person but I feel myself almost holding back because I am so damn scared sometimes.

I read the stories on this board, and all of the hardships that so many girls have encountered, I have friends who have lost babies two weeks before their due date - and it just freaks me out to no end.

I know it's no good to worry like this - and this post is making me sound crazier than I am (I don't obsess over this morning, noon, and night) - I just think I will be happy when that test is done.

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

Diana-

We are like from the same worrying mold I tell you.

When I walked out of the Dr's yesterday I busted out in tears and said to DH, I cant take all the different worries...its TOO much.

He is always saying to me to "enjoy the PG" , and I think hes on Crack...How can I enjoy something so scary and stressful .

But Im trying..and it sounds like you are as well.

And your right. In my heart I think the baby will be fine, then boom, one minute I will just FREAK out and say oh god, what if its not...ya know?

Just think its gonna get even WORSE when the baby actually comes! Chat Icon

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

I know it's only going to get worse.

I am a worry wart now. I think about my kid getting a license (which will NOT happen until he/she is at least 25) I may have to be put into a mental hospital once the kid starts driving with all of the idiot drivers out there!

Nothing but GOOD TIMES ahead!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

I just looked it up online for both of u--and either I am reading it wrong or I am getting that Donna's results are not bad.
There is a special blood test that can be done at 18 weeks so u do not have to wait and stress.
It says on all these sites--it is not 100% even with a good measurement...so really...there is no time for anyone to stop worrying..
You just have to trust things will be ok..and no it isn't easy.
I can think it to where i worry too--but I am trying not to-worrying is not good for your health or theirs.
if u go to dogpile.com search and put in nuchal fold downs and theres a slew of articles.
Please try not to worry...I know thats a crock I am saying but try..
I will even call my high risk if u guys want.
hugs.

Re: Nuchal Translucence Test

I go for this sono in a little over 2 weeks. They only have me scheduled for the sono (after drinking tons and tons of h2o), but my dr. never said anything about bloodwork at that time. Am I supposed to have it before this 12-wk appointment? I am almost positive they don't do bloodwork at their office, I've had to go to the lab.

Thanks, and I'm sure all of your test are goiing to turn out just fine Chat Icon

Oh, great, thank you! Perhaps that's what they'll do. One more ? for you- is this the same as the ultrascreen some posters talk about? There are too many tests to keep track of! Chat Icon

And, lots and lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you, I'm sure everything will be ok for you!

ETA: Duh Chat Icon You mentioned your 'ultrascreen' in your reply and I totally missed it the first time I read it. I guess the NT sono and the ultrascreen are the same. Sorry Chat Icon
