I read online somewhere that it is supposed to be used for really delicate ornaments so they don't break.
That doesn't make sense to me either they are going to fall off different from an upside down tree than a right side up tree. In my opinion it would fall off easier.
Really weird.

I am sure people arent doing this for this reason but while watching one of those music channels on tv last night, apparently, there is reason behind this that stems from hundreds of years ago. Like I said, no one is probably doing it for that reason but it was done and has some sort of meaning. Now I cant remember what it said..ill come back later after I Ask my mom. LOL
