Peanut Allergy--Is Pizza safe to eat?

I just found out Matteo is possibly allergic to peanuts. He had a reaction on Friday and we ended up in the ER and they gave him antihistamines and steroids b/c the benadryl wasn't cutting it.

I have to bring him to the allergist to find out what's goinig on.

My question is, do those of you with kids that havea peanut allergy order out for Pizza? He's had it before, and he's eaten it plenty of times. But now because he is sensitized to peanuts, I don't know if I should.

Poor Matteo! I think he would be fine! I don't think they use peanut oil in anything!

Jacob is allergic to peanuts and he eats pizza all the time without a problem.

Thank you! I pulled on one thing on the internet and people were sayinig they didn't give pizza b/c of their peanut allergy. And I'm paranoid right now until I see how bad his allergy is!

Hi, Ava has a peanut/tree nut allergy too. It is very scary in the beginning.

If you are giving him pizza, ask the pizza place 2 things:

1) Do they use peanut oil in the sauce?

2) Do they grease the pans with peanut oil?

You would be surprised, I have come across a few that do use peanut oil over the past 2 years.

Make sure you read all labels. Don't let him eat anything from a bakery unless it is a Peanut Free Bakery. I don't know where you live, but there is one in Brightwaters.

Also, No Dunkin Donuts or Entemanns.

I'm not a peanut allergy mom but my friend's son has a severe anaphylactic peanut allergy. They always ask the above questions plus they ask whether the pans are used for anything else that may have nuts or peanut oil. I think that the allergist will give you specific guidelines and make sure that everything is clear regarding your child's specific situation. My son has an egg allergy, and while it is a severe one, his allergist does not think it's potentially fatal even though my friend's son's peanut allergy is. Make sure you have an allergist that you trust. My son may be more likely to develop peanut allergy because of the egg allergy. I could tell a scary story about Entemmanns but I'll just say be careful!!!

Thank you for this info, I so much appreciate it. Does this mean even things he's had before he can't have now? I mean he's had pizza and he's had entenmann's already. But now that he's had this reaction those things may give him a reaction?

Wow. Totally uncalled for. I was just asking b/c I didn't see the correlation

I didn't mean to offend you, I was just asking to see if you maybe gave your child pizza and other things and they had an allergy.

I was just shocked at your "tone"

But personally, I'd call the pizzeria and see if they use anything with peanuts or peanut oils. CHances are, they don't, but they can probably work with you

I'd be more careful of places like McDonald's b/c I think they do use peanut oil (or used to)

Yes make sure you ask at the pizza place. I was talking with some moms recently at a play date and one of the moms was telling another that some of the pizza places do use peanut oil and others don't - so you need to ask. I think most don't but there are some that do.

As other people have said, you should ask what's in the pizza, and if they aren't sure go elsewhere.

Not just at the pizzeria, but anywhere you take him you need to look at the other items on the menu for possible cross-contamination. For example, I know someone who has a tree nut allergic dc so she doesn't buy bagels anywhere since they usually have muffins and creme cheese with nuts in them at the store too. I'm pretty strict about that kind of stuff too, ds has never even had french fries from a restaurant since they usually fry breaded things in the same fryer and most bread contains dairy.

I also found the food allergy board at Babycenter and Kids with food allergies to be extremely helpful.
