Flying with Kids

We are flying to florida on Thurs with our 4 yo and 5 yo. We are bringing their car seats and plan on checking them. We need them bc we are renting a car in Florida. We will need to get a taxi or uber when we arrive back at LGA. Has anyone done this with carseats? The thought of having luggage, 2 carseats, and 2 kids trying to get into a taxi is stressing me out! Any tips??

our boys are 4 and 7 and we travel a lot with them. We actually bought these MiFold travel booster seats. Look them up and see if your kids meet the requirements for them. They fold up into luggage so they're easy to travel with....

Re: Flying with Kids

If they meet the requirements for a booster, you can try the Bubble Bum. It's a breeze to travel with.
DD was still in a 5 pt harness until 7 years old, but when we flew we took the bubble bum and she was able to sit fine in it with just the seat belt in the Uber or rental car

We just flew for the first time with our 3 year old. We actually used the car seat on the plane as I was reluctant to check it. It wasn't nearly as annoying as I anticipated. For our next trip, we would definitely get a car seat travel cart.

If you don't want to rent the car seats from the car rental place then I would bring them on the plane and have the kids sit in them. They get tossed in checked bag and I have had mine come out with missing pieces. Also, a car seat travel cart is very helpful. You can take the travel cart with the seat attached and your kid in the seat through the airport. If you decide to check the seat, do it at the gate and make sure to put them in a gate check bag. They will check the seats at the gate and then the seats will be waiting for you when you get off the plane.

If they are decent sized kids, I just get a booster seat in Florida. It usually costs around $20 and I bring it back with us to use as a spare seat or toss. At home, I keep them in a harness, but we do really limited driving on vacation (plus they are height/weight appropriate for the booster, but I’m conservative).

When they were small, I’d bring at least one car seat and it would be gate checked. I have one that I use that’s light weight and I put in bus/cab for school. It cost $60 new (so I’d prefer to buy vs rent). They (JetBlue) have always treated my seats well and that is without a bag or any additional protection.

It’s not terrible to bring one on the plane and I do it now with our 2 year old. It is harder with 2 kids and impossible if you are traveling solo with 2 kids.

As for cabs, we risk it there. We stuck the youngest in a car seat and the others in seatbelts. I’ve taken to driving our car down and using airport parking to avoid this risk more often (now we have 3 and the fee for a cab for 5 people and luggage is like another flight... and if you want a company with car seats it’s is even more). Parking at airports tends to run around $200 but isn’t THAT bad (even at LGA) and gives you piece of mind.

ETA: I had a travel cart. It was OK. I didn’t think it helped that much if you had a spare arm esp when traveling with the light car seat

When you say you buy a booster seat in Florida...how do you work that? You land at the airport and then what? Where do you buy a booster? How do you get to a store with the kids?

Thanks everyone!! My sons 5pt harness seat converts to a high back booster and I'm going to borrow another one. I think they will be lighter to travel with than the britax carseat! We can't park at the airport because we are flying out of JFK and home to LGA.

You oldest can probably use the bubble bum and it folds up so tiny. You just blow it up when you need to use it.
So much easier than carrying 2 boosters
DD used it at 5 and sat fine on it- it was a short Uber ride to our hotel

We've used the bubble bum while traveling since dd was 4. Its great and so convenient. I might hesitate to use it on highways going home from LaGuardia though. Where we travel the speed limit is literally 25mph so I was fine with it.

We usually risk the drive (it’s short and there are big box stores everywhere in FL and we stop for diapers) and I never check luggage anymore, but I may get a bubble bum or two for the future. Looks like a great thing to have the kids stick in their backpacks! May be good if we ever get into carpooling too.

This is why I love this board.

Yes, that bubble bum is life changing! We even use it at home for carpooling, or when my sister is taking her somewhere with her kids. It's small too so it can fit between 2 car seats or boosters in a car with other seats
