Eczema Tips?
What helpful tips, if any, do you have for children with eczema? I haven't taken DD to a dermatologist yet because I don't think it's very bad so was looking for over the counter creams, ointments, and bath products that you feel have been successful. If I don't see improvement using those then I will make an appointment for the dermatologist. I already know to cut down on giving her a bath as the water aggravates it and water should be cool or room temperature. Thanks!

Re: Eczema Tips?
We’ve had good success with the eucerin baby eczema cream, but I do have to use the rx cream if it’s a more significant flare-up.
For Around her mouth, we avoid acidic food and/or try to wipe her face immediately with a soft and barely wet wash cloth.

Aquaphor worked really well for us. Also a low dose cortisone cream that the pediatrician prescribed mixed into Vaseline also halped alot.

I agree with the Eucerin 100% it works so good. We also have to use Rx cream occasionally
Also I don’t wash DS with a wash cloth, it aggregates his skins too much so we just use our hands.

Eczema Tips?
The website for the national eczema foundation has been really helpful for me. They actually recommend a quick daily bath followed by immediate moisturizing. I haven't tried that tbh bc the idea is just overwhelming to me.
My oldest had it pretty bad at times. We started adding tea tree oil to her bathwater, washing with high quality Shea butter soap, and then immediately rubbing coconut oil on her before even drying her off. I don't know if it was the new routine or just age but it cleared up after a few weeks and she rarely has had issues since.
I have had terrible flare ups myself and try to only use products recommended on the NEA site but I did need a steroid at times.

Re: Eczema Tips?
Water is good for eczema, soap is not. Daily lukewarm baths can be super helpful. My daughter gets severe weeping eczema, it's so gross. When she doesn't have open skin, coconut oil works great, but it's very messy. When you bathe her, pat dry with a towel, don't rub, and moisturize immediately while her skin is still kind of damp, this will lock in the moisture. We've used every kind of cream there is, none really worked, but we use cerave on a daily basis, not my favorite but it doesn't irritate her skin so i roll with it.

Re: Eczema Tips?
I have eczema. Kids have mild. I minimize baths. If needed, I will “wash up” butts and privates. Careful with moisturizers. Many will dry you/irritate you. Agree w PP cc going through website for best moisturizers. I’ve used Eucerin, Vitamin E, tons of natural stuff and low dose steroid for severe flares. I’ve done tons of things over the years... IMO, nothing is great (except steroid cream... but can’t use it forever). I do sun exposure (with sunscreen) as a must. It’s hard in the winter, so we try to time our vacations. Now I’m hearing that it’s good for eyesight too (to delay glasses for the kids).
Also: I actually like the fact that I saw a dermatologist early. It’s one of the doctors that I see yearly and I need the most. Been going to mine for way over 10 years.

Re: Eczema Tips?
You should use unscented moisturizers like Acquafor or Eucerin. The tubs are best b/c they are thicker. When it's in a flareup, use Cortisone on it. Apply twice a day and always right after bath.
Nothing worked for DS. We even tried a few prescriptions that didn't help. Then we went to a dermatologist who hit on the right rx and he's pretty much better now. He did have a flareup as the weather got cold recently, but he's coming out of it now.

Eczema Tips?
For those that use cortisone, is it over the counter from like a CVS or Target? Or prescription cream/ointment?

There's both. You can buy it OTC but if you need a stronger version, there's also prescriptions. It's in the itch relief section.

Re: Eczema Tips?
Our dermatologist has us bathe DD every day for 20 minutes in lukewarm water (we don’t use soap every day but when we do, we use Mustela). We pat her dry and immediately apply CeraVe moisturizing CREAM (the one in the tub, not the lotion in the bottle). For her cheeks/around her mouth, we use coconut oil right after the bath.
We have Rx creams and ointments for flare ups but I rarely use them anymore. Now that we have her food allergies under control her eczema has been SO much better.
