What tools and vinyl would you suggest for a new cricut user?

I think I'm going to finally purchase a Cricut cutter. What tools do I need to get started? What should I consider purchasing down the line? and where do I purchase vinyl (And how many different types of vinyl are there? I'd appreciate any other tips that you think would be helpful. Thanks!!

Re: Cricut tools and vinyl

I’m fairly new to this, but you definitely need the tool that’s like a plastic spatula and the one that’s like a small metal spatula on a stick. The hook is helpful too for weeding out small areas. I’d recommend getting extra cutting mats. Sometimes I’m on a roll cutting, ans I dont want to stop to remove everything from the mat just to be able to cut my next piece.

As for vinyl, I tend to do more with paper, but oracle seems to be the most recommended. They make two types: a removable and a permanent (the numbers after the product tell you which is which) so you just have to get whichever fits your project needs. Ans also transfer tape. The ones with grid lines work best so you can line things up.

Have fun!

651 is outdoor vinyl, or vinyl for water bottles, etc.
631 is for walls, etc.

Michael's sells both in sheets for $1.99 and often on sale.

I buy mine on Ebay when I need a lot. Vinyl Elite is a great seller.

Heat transfer vinyl (HTV), I only buy Siser Easyweed. I've tried many brands, and that is the easiest to weed.

I would get extra sticky mats, and when yours get dirty, use a baby wipe to clean them. It makes them sticky again

651vinyl.com is awesome to buy vinyl from. Fast shipping. And good prices. And they send a few pieces of candy in he box lol.

I would get the cricut tool set. I use it all the time.
Cardstock packs. Michael’s usually has them on sale.
