Charities for schools to donate to
I am coming up with ideas for my school's student council to work on. We are looking both locally and globally. Any charities or organization that you know of that are in need and would benefit from some sort of collection like this? We would love to donate to one of the areas affected by the horrendous hurricanes but want to make sure it is a legit charity and not sure which ones would be best. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

My school reached out to other schools in Texas and Florida And Puerto Rico and got a list of things and is supporting them that way. Rather than through an organization.

Our school (a catholic school) had a dress down day and all the money raised went to two catholic schools in Houston that lost everything. We are having another for Puerto Rico

I know there is a lot going on around the world and so many are in need, but even on LI we have many charities and organizations that can use donations. Many animal based organization ca use donations, we have a lot of kids on LI and NYC who go without food and many communities in the middle of America were people go without.

Local charities
Birthday Wishes of Long Island (they do parties for kids living in shelters on the island). We personally bake and collect for them. Great organization!
Save A Pet in Port Jeff - they are always looking for supplies for the animals they take in
NSASA - Local chapter of the Autism Society of America. They provide various events and outings free of charge for those with Autism.
Ronald McDonald House of Long Island - They have a wish list and also a baking program for students (we have done this, and the kids thought it was so rewarding).

Re: Charities for schools to donate to
Our student council usually does a Book Fairies drive, in addition to the canned food drives around the holidays and the toiletry drives for shelters. They've also done a drive for blankets, donated to a local animal shelter.
