My family in PR is watching this one progress. They are a bit freaked out.

She's now a Cat 5. My cousin received an evacuation notice and she and her family has to be out of their house by tomorrow. They are headed to San Juan. They are freaking out but staying outwardly calm for the kids.

Re: Hurricane Maria

For the next couple of days at least, it looks like it's following the same path as Irma... which means that all of the devastated islands are going to get hit again...

Definitely watching this one, as we are going on a cruise on Friday. Hoping it doesn't hit all of those islands again :(

Re: Hurricane Maria

St. John USVI has requested that all non-essential persons on the island evacuate. There is no safe shelter for them, it also got destroyed during Irma.

This might be a stupid question but where do they expect them to go?? Do we have shelter set up for them?

Not a stupid question at all.
Most who have evacuated the island after Irma have been transported to Puerto Rico and then from there have gone stateside. The "Puerto Rican Navy", a flotilla of private boats, transported relief supplies to St. Thomas / St. John and have transported people out. Women, children and elderly were the priority.
Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have also sent cruise ships to St. Thomas to pick up evacuees, and have taken them to Miami.
Those remaining on island will have to get to the mainland, as Puerto Rico is now in Maria's path. I believe the airport at St. Thomas is open to limited commercial flights.

Also if evacuating is not a possible option, it's advised to look for shelter in places who have followed a building code for hurricanes and have been approved for it. If u're on the beach, it's best to stay in higher floors (due to possible flooding), and if u're in areas in the middle of the island, it's best to stay in the first floor, although basements are best.

It's so heartbreaking to witness how a product of nature can be so devastating and bring so much despair. It can take a while for these islands to recuperate, especially for locals that don't have enough money Chat Icon

It really is heartbreaking. Ive seen an Island like St. Maarten build itself up over the past 20 years and now it is all gone... All of those peoples businesses, their homes, their livelihood. It is just terrible.

All these poor islands and poor people. And what's even scarier is this is just the beginning of the season. My dh's family can't even leave because 3 of them are drs and nurses.
