Daughter showing interest in acting/modeling?

My DD has been expressing interest in possible modeling clothes or even try acting for commercials or TV. She definitely has talent and I do feel she has a good look/body type for modeling clothes for magazines or commercials. This all came from her and I really wouldn't even know where to begin? Do I go to an agency? Will this be expensive to do? Any input would be great thanks!!

Yes, you would go to an agency. DH did it when he was younger and booked some small jobs. My MIL knew someone who got him into it.

Keep in mind most auditions are during the day, during the week and it can take 100s of auditions to book a job. If you work it would be nearly impossible to do.

Agreed...my friend's daughter does modeling (walked for NYFW) and acting. She spends many days in manhattan with her going to auditions and working...she doesn't work, but does have other kids, which makes it hard. She also takes a lot of classes in the city as well as classes here on the island.

I am self employed and make my own hours but good to know. Any idea how I find a reputable agency?

Reputable agency. It's a lot of schlepping to NYC for castings that last 5 minutes. So you are paying for gas, tolls, parking. You also need professional head shots. I know some kids that do this. It's a lot...and some of them don't seem happy doing it to be honest. I think they get burnt out and just want to be kids, but can't because they have to "work".

I've heard it's difficult, but if it's something that she'd like to do I'd give it a shot! My major concern would be the disappointment. My daughter is 6 and would not deal with the rejection well.

I would def. start with headshots, and booking an agency and after meeting with them, you will see how it goes!

I took my DS to Generation. There is a huge time commitment and very little money when they are young due to the limited hrs they are allowed to work.

I think the first thing you should do is sign her up for acting classes & see if she enjoys it.

There was a whole thread about this on one of the Facebook groups I belong to. Everyone said do not spend money on professional head shots, that the agencies just want you to send send in regular photos of your child and you can usually submit them right through their websites. Some of the reputable agencies that were mentioned on that thread were Generation, Zuri, New York Model Management and Munchkin.

Re: Daughter showing interest in acting/modeling?

My daughter does it.she is 8. This has been an interest of hers for awhile. I started with getting her a photo shoot. There is a lot of waiting around and having to be on in front of strangers. I wanted to make sure she could handle the demands they make and the waiting around and taking direction from strangers. From there I used the photos from that shoot and sent them to several agencies. She got offers from 3. We went with a smaller boutique agency and she was signed to a 3 year contract. It is a lot of work and getting booked is not easy. They can see 100 kids for 1 casting. So there is a lot of this with zero feedback. You often get less than 24 hours notice and auditions will be after school which for LI kids means leaving school early for a 3:30 audition in the city. You can spend over an hour getting there and your kid goes in for 1 minute.

1st step is sending pictures to an agency and getting signed. Without that you got nothing.

Good luck!

I agree with everything that Jenhos said and I will add this. I briefly modeled as a child (I was 5 or 6). I grew up in Suffolk. It was very hard getting in and out of the city all the time for auditions and the auditions were grueling. A lot of waiting around to ultimately be rejected. It can be very defeating. I have a cousin that is very successful in the entertainment industry. She started acting and modeling when she was around 11 or 12. I think that prior to that age, if my child showed an interest I would enroll them in local acting classes and see how they do. I don't think I would spend the time, energy and money schlepping in and out of the city while they are very young, and we live very close to the city on a good train line. Good luck with whatever you decide though!

Look into Stars of Tomorrow if you decide to try classes first, they are amazing
