Hotel- Upgrades

I will be staying at a Marriott for a very important week, (my daughters birthday, my wedding anniversary, and the 1 year anniversary of my moms death) they are all back to back to back.

I was considering trying to see if I could get this noted somehow so that they would upgrade us if possible. I know this is common when they know you are honeymooners or something else. I am just not sure how to question if there is any possibility of an upgrade. Has anyone ever do this? Do I state in advance that these events are occurring? Or do you only ask that day when checking in? Any advice on what and when I am supposed to do/say what in an effort to be upgraded to a nicer room??

Hotel- Upgrades

I travel quite a bot for work and have never been upgraded except for the time I had status with the hotel chain. I don't think people get upgraded as much as its talked about unless a travel agent gets you some perks.

I've only been upgraded when I have status and usually when we're only staying one night.

I don't travel often, but I was not upgraded for my honeymoon and in fact they gave us a room with 2 beds. LOL. I've never even met anyone who got an upgraded room.

Re: Hotel- Upgrades

I agree with the others. If they gave away the good rooms for free, then nobody would pay the extra money for them. Just say it's your anniversary, birthday, divorce is finalized celebration etc and bam, you're in a suite! Chat Icon
I think only high rollers who spend a ton in casinos get upgrades in the casino hotels.

I actually get upgraded a lot, but only at hotels where I have status, and the upgrades aren't all that important. Like from a partial ocean view room to a full ocean front room. Or from a suite to a club level suite. In other words, it's not like we are booking a basic room and getting thrown in the presidential suite.

It's not that they're not "important" - it's more like it's not a big leap for the hotel.

For example, the price difference between a partial ocean view and a full ocean view isn't huge. We won't book a basic garden view room (a/k/a parking lot view) and expect to get upgraded to an oceanfront.

We will get upgraded BUT only at hotels where we have status or I'm a frequent guest.

The only other time I've been upgraded was when I've booked through a travel agent who does a lot of business with that particular hotel chain.

Re: Hotel- Upgrades

I get upgraded to the next level room at Starwood hotels, where I have status.
I've never gotten upgrades at other chains.

You might try calling the concierge and seeing if they can do something, or steer you in the direction to someone who might.

Tip $20 upon arrival. An old intern on mine was a reservationist at Marriot and she said this was the best way to get them to help you out.

We have Platinum Premier lifetime status with Marriott and only get upgraded if there is an upgrade available. Many times the better rooms are booked. I would call and tell them you are celebrating xyz and so they have any upgrades. Ask how much it is and they.might be kind enough to waive it. I would not wait until check in though

Re: Hotel- Upgrades

We get upgraded frequently.
We book room direct from hotel. Don't use third parties to book (like Expedia).
Inform them of special occasion when booking.
Inform them of special occasion when checking in.
Tip your concierge (nicely) when checking in. Even if this won't get you an official upgrade, it will get you a better room. We didn't get an upgrade last time, but got a larger room with balcony when booking an ocean view. I consider that an upgrade... but the hotel didn't.
Travel when your hotel's occupancy will be low.
Be part of a hotel loyalty program
Be polite. The hotels "remember" you... or at least their notes on you (seriously).
I think not all hotel chains are the same. We do tend to get upgraded with Marriott.

See if you can send them a message on Facebook. Many businesses are very responsive. Can't hurt to ask.
