Question - Catholic Religion Classes

My DD is going into 4th grade, she's been going to religion since 1st grade and she made her communion. Tell me, what happens (if anything) if you skip a year of classes? Are there consequences? Would she have to repeat a year and make her confirmation later? Thx.

Question - Catholic Religion Classes

She would likely have to repeat the year.

If it's based on scheduling, does your parish offer a homeschool option?

Nothing. My son skipped a year. He still had to do that level so he just continued and was a year behind those in his age group. My church does not offer a homeschool option.

Nothing. Confirmation requires classes in 6-7-8. So, truly, they don't need to even go 3-4-5.

this is what I thought. I don't get why all of a sudden kids have to go starting in first grade all they way though 8th grade. I def. Do not remember going all that time. Granted I just realized my parents switched me to catholic school for 3rd and 4th but I def. Didn't go in 5th grade. I went again in 6-7-8. And I was already behind when I went in 3rd grade apparently I had to make up making my communion.

It depends on your church- she may have to make the year up.

Question - Catholic Religion Classes

My DD didn't go K-1 and nothing happened she did her communion on time. I tried homeschooling last year for 3rd and I got so annoyed on the first parent meeting the deacon reprimanded all the parents for not showing up for mass during the summer. That I decided I was done.

Re: Question - Catholic Religion Classes

Thanks everyone for the info.

So here's the deal, I'm not very religious and neither is my DH however, he felt we should at least give her some foundation since *technically* we're both Catholic so I've been taking her to religion classes every week.

For various reasons, one being that we may end up moving during the school year, I just wanted to take the year off. With no sacraments or anything going on in the 4th grade year I figured she wouldn't miss much. Plus, if we move and start in a new church, won't they just want proof she made communion, will they really check or care that she skipped a year of clasees?

I think in the case you are describing it should be fine.
I doubt your new church will ask about her completing the 4th grade religion class.

I think it depends on the parish. I personally think it's good to go each year because it reinforces the lessons. But, if you explain your situation, they'll probably put her with her age group when she starts again and she'll make confirmation on time.

I think it depends on your parish.

Where we live, kids do not get confirmed until 12th grade!! I think unfortunately, it might be the same in Massachusetts.

I think it's probably because the point of going to these Religious Ed classes to learn about your religion and to make it a part of your everyday life--not to shortcut to sacraments.
What's the point in getting the sacraments in the first place if you don't have the foundation of knowledge of your religion??
