To be a NYC Tourist for the Day
I need NYC tourist help. LOL
In a few weeks, we are having some family come in from out of the country; and it's their first time to America. Our only day to take them to NYC is a Sunday.
My mom is adamant about taking them to see St. Patricks Cathedral.
We are limited on time; so I am trying to think of a few spots that would be worth doing within a 2-3 hour time frame.
I rented a truck; so my DH is driving us. He will be our cheffeur (after some convincing). LOL
So besides, St. Patricks, and Times Square vicinity; is there anything else they HAVE to see? We will probably drive down West Side Highway so they can get a view of the Statue of Liberty.
What else is near or around St. Patricks that is worth seeing from the eyes of a tourist?
I know they would like to browse the outdoor flea markets; but I forget what streets they're on. There are a few.
Do you think the Cathedral, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and an outdoor flea market is enough?
Unfortunately; not enough time to go to any Observation Decks.
Thanks so much!!!

I suppose that I am being the devil's advocate but have you asked them if there is anything specific they want to see. I have lived in NY all of my 44 years. I have never been to the Statue of LIberty and have no desire. Pretty sure I have never been to St. Patrick's Cathedral. And the closest I have been to central park was a carriage ride before going to Tiffany.
Are these things that they would be interested in? Going to see a flea market and Times Square does not sound like a good time to me.

St. Patricks, Rock Ctr. and Times Square are all within a few blocks, so that's no problem to hit at once. I would then venture either uptown to Central Park or downtown to Ground Zero/Wall Street, etc. I have no clue where to find an outside flea market but you may find some farmer's markets scattered around on a Sunday morning. If it were me, I'd probably head to Central Park.

When my family visited it was "Drive us by the Dakota Building" because we are Beatles fans.. but the younger group wanted to go around Columbus Circle (where the parade goes). They wanted to see the places they saw on TV. Time Square and to drive by the Broadway Shows, Past the Empire State building, even a drive down to the by the world financial center "THAT's Wall Street!?" the Bull.. That was obviously years ago. But it was our driving tour day.

I honestly don't think they would know where they would want to go.
I would assume picture of the Skyline would be OK; But I don't know. The outside Flea market would be for them to buy things; but its either there or just head downtown and shop there I guess.
I can't stand Times Square; but I always thought a tourist would want to see it all of that. So I honestly have no clue.

Re: To be a NYC Tourist for the Day
I would pick either midtown or downtown if you only have 2-3hrs.
If midtown, I'd hit St Patrick's then Rock Center and go up 5th to Central Park. You can drive through times square on the way there or home to see it but I would avoid walking around there (I think it's so gross). Maybe also drive past Empire State Building too. I'd probably take the 59th street bridge in because I always love that view.
if downtown, you could go to Battery Park and see the statue of liberty, see the stock exchange, the bull, trinity church, hit fraunces tavern, see the 9/11 memorial, freedom tower etc. Maybe drive in over the Brooklyn Bridge and you can see the seaport from the FDR.

Your time frame is kind of tight. After St. Pat's drive down Fifth Avenue to see the Empire State building then cut over to the West Side Highway to Battery Park to see the Statue. Wall Street, Ground Zero. Drive across the Brooklyn Bridge and up the BQE to see the skyline from across the river. That's all I got for 2-3 hours.
Outdoor flea market shopping is tough, there's really nothing to buy but crap. Google NYC street fairs to see what is going in that particular Sunday.

Agree with this. I would skip outdoor flea market and try to drive through Times Square. Even though it's a huge pain, every tourist wants to see it.

This is a great advice. I'd start at Central Park and drive south 5th Ave and hit all of the places PP mentioned. Down in Battery Park maybe try to go and see the Bull and Trinity Church, also.

Re: To be a NYC Tourist for the Day
Thanks guys for the suggestions.
Will start at the Cathedral.....then will work our way down 5th. I won't do Central Park. I think that is the best plan for the time frame I have.
I'm nixing the outdoor flea market. If they want souvenirs, etc; I'll take them to Canal St.

Re: To be a NYC Tourist for the Day
Depending on where they are from, I think the Cathedral is a waste of time. There are much better churches around the world that St. Patrick's seems laughable.
I'd definitely do Times Square, even though it's so touristy, it's still worth seeing.

Union Square might have some outdoor vendors. Though Central Park would have some, too. Like street art.

the Oculus is also a cool thing to see, if you make it downtown to the Memorial & 1 WTC.

Re: To be a NYC Tourist for the Day
I would check to see if there will be any street fairs or parades on the day you're coming in. That can really have an impact on traffic. So that 2-3 hr time frame may not allow you to do much.

I agree about St. Pat's.
If you only have one day I wouldn't choose more than 2 places unless you're willing to take the subway.

I was going to say- driving in NYC is my absolute worst nightmare. Is there any way you can use mass transit? You will get to see more
