Removing paneling?

Is this a costly task? DH and I are house hunting and came across a house that has a bunch of paneling. Wondering about how much it would be to take it all down or maybe just leave it and paint it?

Re: Removing paneling?

You can rip it down yourself.
The issue is the walls under it with likely be destroyed so you will need to re-sheet rock and that is what can get costly on labor if you can't do it yourself

Re: Removing paneling?

It depends on how the paneling on the walls if its glue, you would need all new sheetrock. If it is nailed it you can get away with spackling it.

Painting it is the cheapest and probably the easiest solution, as long as you don't mind the look of it.

We had paneling in almost every room of our house and we removed all of it ourselves.

We had paneling in one room when we removed it which was easy there was no Sheetrock underneath is so even if we didn't want to resheetrock we has no choice but too.

Re: Removing paneling?

Thanks everyone. DH and I are not handy, so we would hire someone to tear down/add sheet rock if necessary. I searched some pics for painted wood paneling and I really don't mind the look.

I know it was trendy at one time, but I can't imagine how! Especially the dark wood, makes a place look so dank and dreary. Chat Icon

Yeah it's so depressing.
I think if you paint it white or a nice off white color, it can have a nice look to it and will save you the expense of redoing it

Removing paneling?

My entire house was paneling. We ripped it all down and had to replace most of the drywall. You don;t know what the drywall looks like underneath. Our had been painted and had wall paper in some locations. It was cheaper for us to just put in all new drywall.

We did the work ourselves so I can't comment on cost. In general drywall isn't expensive but its the labor for the tape and Spackle.

Our home has paneling in multiple rooms. I think it was a very 70s thing. Anyway, since my style is very flea market/cottage/country we decided to paint it because we were afraid of what we'd find and it would have been pricey. I do like the look of it painted fortunately.
