Habit Cough

Has anyone experienced habit cough in a child or successfully treated this?

My son developed a habit cough after having a "real" cough due to allergies. Took him to allergist who dx it and told me son he could tell it was habit bc among other things (breathing tests) he noticed my son would take a breath before the cough. So he instructed my son to stop the cough whenever he was breathing in to cough. My son was 6 at the time and making him aware of what he did just before he coughed helped. Also, when he coughed I asked him to stop the cough. It disappeared about 2 weeks later.
