Long Island/NYC Must-Do's?

I have a friend leaving likely leaving NY in the fall. We go to the beach all summer long and love exploring/hiking.. What are some absolute must-do's on LI and in NYC? We want some adventures. :)

My List So Far:

-Montauk Lighthouse
-Brooklyn Bridge
-Statue of Liberty + Ellis Island
-Empire State Building
-LI Ducks Game
-Picture with that big Long Island duck
-Pie from Briemere
-Gold Coast Mansions (Vanderbilt/Oheka)

What else?!

Also, we want to hit a few different beaches. We typically always go to Robert Moses or Jones Beach.. any others we should add to our list?

Sailor's Haven on Fire Island is a gorgeous beach, and usually pretty empty

Long Beach has a gorgeous beach...expensive though for non residents, but beautiful & lots of great restaurants/bars.

Going to the top of the Freedom Tower is a cool experience.

I always liked Top of the Rock over The Empire State Building since I want a picture of it and enjoy looking it at.

I'd do a broadway show.

Also if you do Central Park visit the Conservatory Garden on 105th St. It's gorgeous! And try to rent a row boat at the boat house. Or better yet take the gondola around the lake.

I agree with the Top of the Rock comment. We have done it before sunset, so we can look at the city during day, sunset and at night. The pictures with the Empire State are amazing, same with the views of Central Park.

Freedom Tower is also great.

You can hit a concert or music festival in the area.

Waterfront dining & music @ Claudios in Greenport.

Get spa treatments at Gurneys.

Tool around Battery Park / Oculus area and get wine popsicles at Loopy Doopy rooftop bar. Tons of great shopping down there too now.

Groupon has a great package that's the ferry tour around Manhattan, the top of the Empire State building and Madame Tussaud's. The ferry is all day hop on/hop off so we got off at Battery Park to go to the 9/11 memorial and freedom tower. It's a reasonable, all day, consummate New York experience.

Re: Long Island/NYC Must-Do's?

We moved out of NY a few years ago. We also did a lot of touristy things before moving.

We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, ate in Chinatown, visited most all of the Manhattan museums. It's not there anymore but we rode the ferris wheel at Toys R Us and visited FAO Schwarz. It's a shame that they are gone now.
