Munich

We are going to Paris and Munich in September. Paris I got covered. But, Munich...I have never been. Any suggestions for things to do, see, stay or eat? We were thinking 1 of our 3 days there we would go to Salzburg. Not sure yet.

If you're interested in WWII and history check out a tour to Eagles Nest, Hitler's private hideout. When we did the tour they also stopped for lunch in Rothenburg, which was lovely. It's been a long, long time since I've been though so I'm not sure if they still do these tours. Also interesting there is the Olympic Park/Stadium.

Munich

We loved walking through the English Garden (it's a huge park with a beer garden in the middle - it was beautiful and relaxing) - and we just wandered around, ate German food and drank beer. We are not big museum or tour people, but had a great time just waking around. We stayed at the Hotel An Der Oper - it was nothing amazing as far as hotels go - but really great, central location. I truthfully can't recall the names of any restaurants we ate at (esp. the crazy German names lol) - but everywhere we went was good! You'll have a great time!

I was there with a friend for a long weekend in November.

Hotel: Mercure Munchen Aldstadt. It was fabulous! Centrally located - maybe a 5 minute walk from Marienplatz. Room was nothing special (although free mini bar!) but had everything we needed and was very clean. The breakfast was to die for. I think it was the best breakfast buffet I've ever had. I highly recommend it - very reasonable for the location.

Did a side trip to Dachau which was something I really wanted to see. It was very moving and I'm glad I went.

Food - We ate at Ratskeller in the Marienplatz. My friend (who had been to Munich before) had eaten there and liked it. I thought we were headed for a tourist trap but the food was very good and the prices reasonable. It's right by the Glockenspiel.

We also hit Dallmayr (this big gourmet supermarket) a few times either for snacks to take back or Cafe Bistro upstairs. The bistro is really adorable and had great espresso.

We did Salzburg as well. It might be the prettiest city I've ever been to! So gorgeous. We really just walked around and saw sites from the outside - no official tours. We ate at Cafe Beverly (delicious food but the place reeked of smoke from the bar - yuck) then a delicious dessert at Cafe Mozart.

Viktualienmarkt was very cool.

We walked a lot - up to Odeonsplatz and saw some of the royal attractions. Then we ended up at Hofbrauhaus, which I enjoyed more than I expected to. The food was just ok, but the beer and pretzels were excellent.

Then we walked to Cafe Frischhut which was a very small local place with excellent reviews that I read about online but it serves only one kind of pastry that neither of us were really in the mood for so we left quickly. But I mention it because it's supposed to be incredible.

Some other/outdoor stuff that I wanted to do but it was cold and we ran out of time anyway: the English Garden, the BMW sites, Neuschwanstein.

Not sure if you're bringing kids but there is supposed to be a very highly rated science museum there. I don't remember details but I remember thinking if my son had been with me I would have brought him.
