Very impressed. As a PT observing the process from the patient side, very interesting. Very comprehensive (and exhausting! ) pre op day. You have a strict schedule of appointments to follow but let me tell you, you are assessed and educated from soup to nuts. You are assigned a primary care MD who does their own clearance.

The place is so clean you can eat off the floor. They are focused on infection control, patient education, evidence based practice, and kind staff. No attitudes. They give you a full explanation of what to expect during your stay, so no surprises.

Just thought I'd share, I'm sure some of our parents are looking for new jointsChat Icon

HSS is incredible for the most part. My mom had a spinal surgery there many years back. Every person from surgeon, to admin, to literally the janitor was so nice and helpful. The only downside was the nurses, they were the worst nurses I have ever had to deal with in my life. Apparently , back then at least, HSS had the reputation of having the worst nurses. After they almost killed my mother in the recovery room by first, losing the blood she had banked before the surgery, and then deciding to withold the transfusion she needed because she was bothering them, yes you read that right, and this was 15 years ago, she was only 47, not an old , complaining patient. Thank God a dr saw her before she lost too much more blood! Needlless to say, I went apeshit and we hired private duty nurses around the clock for her. Came to find out during her stay, she was there a week plus, most patients had private duty nurses. All in all, it's a great hospital, and hopefully the nursing has changed. Just something to be aware of.

My grandmother had surgery there years ago and had a very good experience. If I'm remembering correctly, her room had a pretty nice view too!

I used to be an OT and worked with a lot of patients after joint replacements. Any patient I had that had surgery there always had a much quicker and cleaner recovery. They definitely keep a high caliber of surgeons and staff there.

I just had a hip replacement there 5 months ago!! (at the ripe age of 39). They were FANTASTIC! No complaints at all. Clean and professional from soup to nuts!

My dad had meniscus surgery in his knee done there in October. Not a bad thing to say about the place. So clean. Very thorough with care and follow-up. Even when I drove the car up and they were helping us wheel him with all his stuff and crutches. The nurse came out saying he keeps trying to hide these because he doesn't want them, but take themChat Icon

My father had a hip replacement there and loved the hospital. We recommend it to everyone. It's one of the benefits of living in NY.
