weight gain and people's reaction

Hey everyone..

within the last 2 years, I have been dealing with some issues with anxiety. I had a sort of breakdown back in 2015, started seeing a psychologist, and after seeing her for a little while, I decided to take medication.

The medication was great, I was able to really work on myself for almost 2 years and work towards managing my anxiety through mindfulness and other strategies that work for me..

The medication I was taking had caused me to gain over 80lbs. I know this can be a side effect, but it's been hard handling people's reactions to my weight gain. This has been the heaviest I have been in my entire life. I don't know how to handle it and it's making me really sad.

I don't have anything against using medication, but decided to try coming off due to weight gain and trying without for now to see how it goes. I am still seeing my psychologist as well and we are going to pursue another type of medication of I need to.

Any advice? I recently saw a friend I haven't seen in over 6 months and she looked shocked. I just can't get her face out of my thoughts. Thought maybe someone else has gone through this as well?

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I can imagine how hard it must be. Especially because it was through no fault of your own and it's not like you can just diet and exercise to get it off.
I can imagine it would be so so difficult to deal with.

Have you asked your doctor if there is an alternative medication without the weight gain side effect?
I can't imagine putting on 80 lbs could be good for your health, so I would think there might be something else out there that would help you feel good mentally without the excessive side effects.

Thank you!! Yes, my psychologist and I were discussing some other possible alternatives. I have been working for about a month or two without medication and overall, it's been going well! My psychologist and I decided to give myself a little more time off of it to see how it goes and then pursue other medications if I need it! Thank you so much! Chat Icon

Which one are you on?

I've been on Zoloft for almost 3 years and only gained 4 pounds. But that's mainly because I stopped exercising.

Maybe you can give Zoloft a try

I'm sorry you're going through this! Chat Icon
