Adults week away or Family cruise??

We are looking to go away with another family we're close with. Last year we did the Disney cruise together, weekend in Boston and the year before that DC. Kids get along great and we get along well with our friends. I know sometimes it's hard to travel with friends bc you want to do different things, but we work together great.

Anyway, last year when we did the cruise it was the week in Nov school was closed. This year we were looking to do a cruise the same week, but the kids only have off 2 days for teacher's convention. No big deal taking them out a few days since it usually is a vacation week and still early on in the school year. Only thing is after being spoiled on the Disney cruise we can't seem to find anything we LOVE. We got a great deal last year bc it was a repositioning cruise. This year it's sooo much more. We figured since we've all turned 40 this year and celebrating 10 year anniv maybe we'll look into all inclusive in Mexico and do adults and leave the kids with family for 5 days.
I know it's two separate things and either one we'll have a blast. Kids will be two 8 year olds a 6 yr old and 5 yr old. They stayed in the kids club together while we also enjoyed adult time.
Thoughts? We have never been on a vacation away from them besides a long weekend where we've driven somewhere a few hours away. I know they'll be fine and we'll have fun either way. Cruise we were also looking at is the RC Anthem of the Seas leaving out of NJ.
Thanks! Sorry so long... Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you're comfortable leaving the kids and have childcare, go for it! Even though kids spend a lot of time in the kids club, its such a different experience going away without them. Even 3-4 days away with just adults is great.

Adults week away or Family cruise??

I have never left my kids for more than one night, they are 5 and 2, if when they are that age I have family willing to take them I would do a couple trip.

I know my kids look forward to our family vacations like I do. For me it would depend on if you have another trip planned for the family for the year.

Either way you will have a great time!

For me personally, I would always choose a family trip over a non family trip. I figure my kids are only going to be young for so long. Plenty of time for an adult only trip when they are off to college, etc. That's just me know, and I realize I'm probably the minority!

I get that too, which is why it's a hard decision. We love trips with the kids. We go to Hershey Park every summer, go away to a city (Boston and DC in the past) during Winter break and will probably go away again then. We also plan on doing a family trip next year during Spring break next year in April. We just got back from a family trip to Aruba. Just as the kids get older it's tougher to take them out of school bc the work is getting tougher.
DH and I haven't been away on an adults vaca since before the kids other than a couple of days or overnight. Figured with the 40th birthdays and 10 year anniv it was a good excuse, but still tough decision.

We do a couple of family vacations every year and also add weekend trip away camping an Hershey Park. If we went without the kids in Nov we'd go away as a family next Spring break.

Go away for your Anniversary with your adult friends. You deserve a trip to celebrate those 10 years! You have nothing to feel bad about leaving the kids behind. You have other short and longer vacations planned with your family so no worries.

Absolutely do the adult trip. We went to Italy for a friend's 40th birthday a couple of years ago and had the most amazing time. It's fun to have friends that you get along with well enough to travel together. If you have someone to watch the kids I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I just got off anthem. Based on your kids ages, 3 of them will be allowed together (6-8 year olds) and the 5 year old will be with the 3-5 year olds. They are very strict and will not make any exceptions. My daughter turned 3 on the second day of our cruise and I wasn't even allowed to sign her up until that day.

Oh no. Good to know. I'd hate for the kids to be separated. It's not fair to our friend's younger daughter.
Besides the kid's club, what was your thought/review of the ship?

ETA - with the Disney cruise they were all allowed to play together and we were worried they'd be split, but they said it wasn't a problem and they all stayed together
