Reducing hours at work
Background: About a year ago, I came across a part time job listing for an office position at a not for profit, so close to my house and perfect hours for me to still be home to get kids on and off the bus. The two people I work with are great and have been beyond understanding on the numerous days that I take off or leave early for kid stuff. 5 days a week/5 hours a day.
We have very predictable highs and lows of when we are busy. When we are not busy I literally have nothing to do, nothing. The pay is ok, we are by no means relying on my paychecks for anything.
Would it be bad/odd/inappropriate to ask my boss to consider letting me work even less? We are starting a busy season, but come early May it will be DEAD until September. Plus, I'm supposed to work during the summer, which basically means I have to pay more in camp than I make so my kids have something when I'm not home.

My question is do they need you in the summer to cover the other workers vacations and such? I would be scared to rock the boat if you have a good thing going. Those part time jobs are hard to find

It never hurts to ask. They could say yes - perhaps they're keeping you on those hours because they think it makes you happy to work 25 hours/week. It may be no problem to work fewer hours.
Or they could say no. But there's no harm in asking.

I take the opposite approach. ask now to reduce your hours in May going forward. Say you'll work the normal hours during busy season. I would think they need you now and would be more likely to say yes.
Again, this is assuming you're planning on working the normal hours during busy season.
IMHO not needing the paycheck gives you a lot of freedom. I'd also consider bringing up the camp thing to them just to point out some of the issues you're having.
This should be brought up at the right time though. Make sure its not piling on a stressful day.
My guess is that they feel they're keeping you on a steady schedule at that time so you have a steady paycheck and they have you for the busy times.
