1 kids to 2...daycare vs. Nanny
OMGGG I want to rip my hair out.
Just crunching some numbers here and when our second baby is born and starts daycare more than half of my salary will be going to tuition x2.
Is it cheaper to get a nanny? It would be almost $500 a week for 2 kids in daycare (4 days).
Did anyone start with one child in daycare and then switch to a nanny when the 2nd was born? I'm really happy at our daycare and just so nervous about the idea of someone coming into our home I guess. I also feel like it's good for my almost 2 year old DD to get out of the house and interact with other kids and adults.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a nanny that's willing to work for $500/week (or less). Yes, daycare is expensive, but in my mind, it's a short term expense until the kids go to school.

I never considered a nanny because IMO I do not think a child will learn and grow and socialize with a nanny the way they do at daycare. It was really expensive when I had 2 in daycare but I looked at it as a short term issue until the older one went to Kindergarten.

Did you consider a family daycare (home daycares) may be a cheaper option.....hang in there!

You could find a nanny for around $500, but those are typically au pairs or live ins. It depends on what you want/ have room for. We tried it out and it was not for us... but some people have awesome experiences and they become bonded.
I can absolutely understand the $$$ shock. The $$ calculations are scary and sadly make it not worth it to work in many circumstances. My firstborn is in public school, but the number of days off, snow days, half days, sick days added in with before and after school care is nuts! Unfortunately, school after care is til 4:15 and cancelled if it rains hard. Early drop off is at 7. My hours are longer on both ends.

We are in a state-certified home daycare now. I might try to negotiate the 2 child discount a little lower. My husband just started a new job that just *might* make it possible for me to stay home for a year or two but I'm scared! I don't know if I can hack it as a SAHM.

See, in that case I think you have to be prepared to be SAHM for longer than that time. You don't know how long it will take you to get a job after you've been out for a few years. And, you have to consider that when you go back, you may have to take a cut in salary since you've been out of the workforce for a while. That's why I view daycare as a short-term investment in our long term careers.

You should look around. We use a licensed home day care, not FT anymore, but for FT we payed 150/wk for 2 and older 180/week for under 2.

Wow that is really cheap! I use a licensed home daycare and pay $300 for one kid (she's under 2) a week. And it appears it goes up a little every year.

I work p/t and pay my Nanny $120 a day, she works 7:00-5:00.
I don't buy into the whole "kids need socialization" at a young age. My kids started p/t preschool at age 3 and are doing just fine with their peers, 1 and 2 year olds just wind up playing next to each other and hitting and biting each other 
I also prefer having a nanny to avoid the daycare germs.

Agreed. For one reason or another I have toured literally every daycare within our location radius and I know i'm not going to find anything that low.

pretty much this - except i do it out of convenience as well. i hate the idea of getting 2 kids out the door by 630am to drop at a sitter or daycare

What about sending them (or just the younger one) 3 days a week (M,W,F)? I did this and got a sitter for Tuesday and negotiated to work from home on Thursday to watch the kids while I worked. It worked out best financially.
Summers are another story.

I've got 2 in full time daycare - and it costs me $3,200 a month. It is insane and takes up most of my monthly take home, but a nanny would have been even more. Good nannies run about $15 an hour and up - so we decided to keep my older dd in daycare and put the baby in too. I also didn't want to take dd out of her program - she learns so much and starts K in September, so I didn't want to pull her out and keep her home where she isn't going to get as much stimulation.

Agree with this. I started my older child at 3 years old in a nursery program, worked out well. The younger child started at 2 and was a waste , IMO. A class here and there is fun for them, the 2 year olds just fight/ bite and don't really play together. I was a SAHM at that time. Now with #3 we have a nanny and it's been amazing. No illness, baby has all of the attention, his schedule is what's best for him (not everyone else) and attends some classes and library. The childcare expense is insane any way you look at it!!
It's also easy since I'm not picking baby up from daycare in this freezing weather, he is in the comfort of his home, his crib, his toys, etc. this is coming from someone who planned on daycare but couldn't get off the waitlist. OP I wouldn't Stay home unless you are planning on taking off until they start school. It doesn't pay to quit a job just for 2 years.

All of this (except I pay a little more for my nanny...after 5.5 yrs together.)
DS1 (5.5 yrs) started pre-K at 3.5 after exclusively being home with the nanny......and socialized without hesitation. I do think that's a matter of personal comfort....some people (and kids) are ok with it and some aren't.
DS2 is 1.5, and I don't plan to put him into pre-K till after his third birthday in Sept. '18.
