Do you take older kids out of school
For vacation? Middle schoolers?
I cant afford a vaca during school breaks. We want to go to Mexico and based on camp and hurricane season july and August are out
Want to take them out mid june for 3 days when we have clerical type days off anyway (NYC DOE)
I think as far as grades teachers mostly have them in around then.

Re: Do you take older kids out of school
At that time of year- mid June- I probably would I feel like most of the learning is done by that point and it's winding down
Any other time- at that age and grade level- I would not

Your kids may have finals in middle school. If they do, I would not take them out in June as they will either be testing or preparing for the test. I think you are better off taking them out early on in the year or mid year before state testing.

Re: Do you take older kids out of school
I pulled out DS for 1-2 days during K, 1st and 2nd. We often tacked on to random long weekends our county has when there are teacher work days. I do not plan to pull him out in 3rd grade on. I would not pull out for middle school.

We try to tack onto long weekends also, or school breaks. For instance, for February break, we are leaving Thursday after school, so they are only missing one day. The airfare was cheaper this way, and then coming back it was also cheaper since it was a weekday, and not the end of a holiday weekend.

Re: Do you take older kids out of school
Last year we went to Disney during the last full week of school in June- DD was back for the final 3 days. She was in 3rd grade- if she was in middle school and had finals I may have rethought that. I would probably lean towards a longer-weekend type trip.

Do you take older kids out of school
I just did with my 6th grader. He missed three days of school around MLK Jr. day for our trip to Turks and Caicos. He missed some work, made it up when he got home. I plan on doing it each year as during school breaks the airfare and resort prices are too high to the places we like to go. When he starts midterms we will adjust the dates to work around them but I have no problem with taking him out of school. I can't imagine 3-4 days in one whole school year is going to make a difference.

My dc are in 4th and 5th grade. They are going to miss the two days before winter break because flights were so much cheaper, but I wouldn't do any more than that. They miss too much and it is hard to catch up. It also depends on the time of year. Their school always have midterms right after MLK weekend so I would never do it then.

In elementary yes. In middle and high school, no. They would have too much work to make up and tests to complete. Unless of course it was an emergency and they would just have to make up the work.

Re: Do you take older kids out of school
We did it in Elementary; but now that DS is in Middle School, we don't do it anymore. We picked him up earlier before Thanksgiving, though, because we had an afternoon flight. At the end, depends on the grade. For me, 7th grade will be a huge no, because he will be applying for High School the next year, and those absences will be considered. What about one day off and use a long weekend like Memorial?
