Re: Please help - BTDT- newborn and a very sick older child at home

Just try to keep the baby away. Since DC is a newborn this should be very easy you don't have to worry about the newborn touching things your sick child would

You should make sure you wash your hands constantly. Any time you touch anything your sick DC does be sure to wash your hands.

I lysol everything when my DC are sick. Anytime they touched a door nob gate etc it was lysoled right away.

Hope DC gets better quickly

Please help - BTDT- newborn and a very sick older child at home

My older son brought us all home a stomach virus when his baby brother was 2 weeks old. We all caught it.

I gave the baby watered down pedialyte until he felt better enough to drink formula again.

My oldest got coxsackie when DD was was like a week or 2 old. Then I got coxsackie, and baby never got it. May have been because I was nursing (with gloves and a mask on, ugh) so she got the antibodies, but who knows.

It's something you can control or prevent. And you are definitely not the first, or last mom to be in this situation, try not to freak out. Keep them apart as much as possible. I had no help so its not like I could have sent either child somewhere, and we survived. It's gonna be ok, just keep an eye on your little one ,and if you feel like the baby is coming down with something, call the doctor!

You got this!

I came home from the hospital with my newborn to DS1 having pink eye and a stomach flu and DS2 having some sort of virus and myself acquiring bronchitis. I was frantic. I kept them away from the baby as much as possible and did diligent handwashing. My ped told me in the hospital (my mom had taken DS2 to see her earlier that day) that the baby carries enough antibodies from mom to keep them healthy. And believe it or not, he was fine. He was fine again when a few weeks later everyone got strep. DS3 is tough. That's for sure.

ETA: I was not BFing. The ped said the antibodies pass from in utero and stay with the baby for quite awhile (I can't remember how long she said...maybe a few weeks).

They say nursing helps with antibodies if you are doing that. Otherwise, I wouldn't stress and do the best you can. With my 3rd, my older 2 kids were sick and she didn't catch anything, but with my 4th, he wound up in the hospital at 7 weeks because of a fever. Luckily, he was fine, but it was scary. But I will say I took the same precautions both times, and it worked out differently for both. So again, don't stress yourself out, but still wash hands/Lysol, don't let the older kids kiss baby hands or face, we allowed feet, since newborns don't touch their feet. Hope they feel better soon, and that the baby stays healthy!

Yes, it happened to me a few months ago. We had a preemie who just got home from the NICU and my two older ones were sick with bad colds/sinus infections. I honestly freaked out. What we did was keep the baby in the bedroom and not allow the boys in the room for days. Then wash all the common objects, like door knobs, hand towels etc. It was a huge stress, but somehow the baby did not get sick. I'm sorry you are dealing with this!

The week I came home with my newborn both my other kids starting vomiting with fevers. I thought I would die from the stress. Kept the baby away from them and had my husband mostly take care of them and the baby thankfully never got it.

Happened to me - older one had pneumonia. I am bfing and the baby (5 weeks at the time) got a low grade fever and cold but was fine - the fever didn't last long at all and she was otherwise normal so we just had to watch her.

Wash hands religiously and as much as possible keep older kid away, that's all you can do. You'll get through it!
