how many words do they have? just wondering what the typical range is.

My son is 18 months old and he says 15-20 words. He just started putting two words together "Hi Dada" or "more cheese"

My dd will be 18 months next week and she says about 15-20 words and also just started putting together two words together like the PP "more cheese" "hi dada" and "all done"
I will say every child is different and I remember my ds didn't say much until he turned 2.

At 16 months, we have over 20 words. Remember to count animal noises as "words" so "meow" for kitty counts as a word.

At that age, my son had *maybe* 10-15 words. He had a HUGE word explosion when he turned 2. He's 2.5 now and we can't get him to stop talking- lol!

DD is almost 13 months and I'd say she has maybe 10 words, though she doesn't always use them correctly (i.e. sometimes she'll call all her toys dolly, she'll say done and then try to grab more food).
Daycare told me she's supposed to have 50 words at 18 months and I nearly fell over. That can't possibly be the norm.

Really?? It seems like so many. I just can't imagine DD having that many words 5 months from now!

Really?? It seems like so many. I just can't imagine DD having that many words 5 months from now!
I thought the same. Was expecting to need an evaluation for DD as she had like 3 words at 15 months. She switched to a toddler class at daycare and by 18 months it just exploded over night. She came home one night speaking little sayings "holy moly" etc overnight!
It's amazing to watch - the physical slows down a little but the verbal takes off. You will also see big changes in coordination and stuff like that.
DS is less verbal than DD but he also took off during this time. You can also tell they really start to understand around them.

DS is almost 17 mos. I don't think he has any words but he understands and communicates and lots of babbling. He'll point to things or literally take us by the hand and bring us over to what he wants.
I was really concerned with my now almost 3 1/2 yo DD. She wasn't speaking a lot but then before she turned 3, it all came together and now she's a chatterbox and doesn't stop! I'm taking a wait and see approach but definitely not concerned right now. DS seems to be on his own timeline and taking a bit longer for things like walking, drinking out of a straw, but we got there. He'll talk when he's ready and I'm sure won't shut up like his sister!
Pls don't be too overly concerned as each kid is different but I know that is hard.

At that age my older son had no words. He understood everything though. He really didn't talk until a few months after he turned 2 and then he went from having no vocabulary to talking in sentences in a matter of weeks. I worried for nothing. Now at almost 3.5 his preschool teacher told me she's amazed at the language he uses and is way advanced for his age. I have to laugh bc I was seriously worried he'd never talk! My younger son is much more verbal than his brother was at 20 months old , he uses several dozen words and tries really hard to talk. Even if he's behind average for his age though, I'm not worried... I've learned he'll catch up and they all go at their own pace and path with milestones like this.

Interesting how everyone develops differently. My 17 month old has about 10 words , but her receptive language skills are excellent and she's extremely alert and observant. I can't wait until she gains more words.

DD is 19 months, but by 16 months she was already putting words together - "Pick up" or "I pick bow" - but she's been about 3 months ahead on language development, so she's not good to go by. DS didn't have quite as many words, but he started putting 2 words together around 18 months.

DS is 15 months and only has 7 words. All of the children on DH's side have needed to work with speech pathologists so I was a little worried but my pediatrician says he's right where he should be.
