CPSE Service Determination Meeting?

I'm meeting with the school district's CPSE next week to determine what services my DC is eligible for. I was given an overview of how the meeting will be carried out but if any one can share their personal experiences, I would appreciate it. Also, are there any important questions I should ask? This is my first time going through this process and I have no one to turn to for feedback. I just want to make the best possible decision for my DC.

Please send me a FM if you don't feel comfortable sharing on here.

Thanks so much Chat Icon

Re: CPSE Service Determination Meeting?

I've been through a few in for my son, including the initial one.

1) did you get a report on the evaluation performed? if not, you should, read it and figure out what you agree with/don't/

2) have an end game in mind, what do you actually want as services? PT/OT, 1:1 frequency etc

3) Have examples from daily life that illustrate the need for why you want the services you want. Some of it you can pull from the results of the assessment performed, but it definitely helps to have examples from the house and preschool as to what you want. For example, he/she doesn't go up the stairs alternating legs. He/she falls a lot without tripping over something. My son would trip a bunch and even though he was doing well in PT and there was discussion about removing it, we bring up the tripping, its a safety issue. If you have a preschool teacher in the meeting, it might be helpful to talk to them before hand and discuss what they've seen in the classroom and your concerns to ensure that they are on the same page.

4) Its put out there as a discussion meeting where we all come to a conclusion what services are needed. However, when we did it for my son, this was basically a scripted meeting.

The administrator running it had her agenda set and decided in advance what was going to happen and lead everyone through it. Her view aligned with what we wanted for our son, so there were no problems. You may have to push to go in another direction from their plan and that is where the examples come in.

5) its easy to take away services.... its harder to add. My son had a 1:1 for a session twice a week in his preschool for half the year. Then we removed it as he was progressing at didn't need her.

Good luck. You may feel like crap when you're done with the meeting. To some extent, its a pile on of the shortcomings of your kid , you included. Don't fall into the trap of downplaying things and getting defensive. You NEED to stress the issues in order to get the services you need for them. If you get the services early, they will be in a much better spot down the line.
