has cable ever asked for your S.S number before giving you a quote?
I spoke to someone yesterday, they gave me a quote, each person I speak says something different about channels price etc.
Today, I called about something else for my Dad. In order to give me a quote they require my S.S... to make sure I dont owe them money on a different acct??
I said who would give you a SS for a quote, is that the norm?

that's crazy.
i can understand them saying some kind of disclaimer: this quote is only valid if you don't already owe us money.
but to ask up front without a commitment on your part is just odd.

You can get a quote for a promotional rate without giving your social... However, the reason they asked you for your social was to make sure you were eligible for the promotion and don't owe cablevision any money.
Sometimes you may be attached to another account from a previous address, an ex husband, family member, etc. Cablevision doesn't know unless they run your social.

i did an online offer quote with verizon and they asked. if i didnt give it they wanted 150 upfront.

I forget if it was cable or phone but I remember one of them asking for my SS number. I don't think it is uncommon. They wanted to see if I was a new customer to see if they could offer me certain deals.

When we moved into our new home, dh went to set up a utility, gas, I think. They wanted his social. The rep said it was a $500 fee if he refused as a new customer. I called back because I was flaberghasted that they wanted that much. They said since the old gas bill was in my name I had no new hook up charges. We did not owe them anything. But for new hook ups they have a policy now to check SSN because people were scamming the utilities out of money.
