OOS Shower & Sitter Question

BIL and his GF are having baby. The shower will be in January in CT. From the time I leave until I return would be about 7 hours (2 hour drive each way plus a 3 hour party). DH is working that day, my mom will be working and I do not have a sitter available for that length of time. I have a close friend who offered to help me out and watch my DC (3 and 6 years) but I feel bad because it's THE ENTIRE DAY and she has her own DC. DH thinks it is super important I am there to show support for the new mom and baby, which normally I agree with, but I think the circumstances are really too much. Plus, weather is huge factor that time of year. What do you think?

OOS Shower & Sitter Question

Is your DH able to take the day off if he thinks it's so important for you to attend?

I would never drive 4 hours for a 3 hour party, but since you are seemingly a nicer person than I am, I would either -

take my friend up on the offer, they are 3 and 6, not newborns, so I don't think it would be too hard on her.

or I would bring my kids with me. I am sure your in-laws would understand and like to see the kids!

I would see if you can bring the kids with you. 7 hours is a long time for your friend to babysit... and it could be even longer if there is traffic.

Id only go if DH was able to take the day off or if we hired a sitter for the day.

I'd make DH take the day off if he thinks it's that important to attend. I would not take the kids with you. Four hours in the car alone with 2 children sounds like torture.

Re: OOS Shower & Sitter Question

Can dh take half a day. So you go to shower and he can relive your friend of babysitting

Seriously. Even if he could I would probably just send a gift. I definitely wouldn't bring the kids for 4hrs in the car for a 3hr party.

Re: OOS Shower & Sitter Question

I would go. It's a shower for close family. I see why your DH would want you to go. I would probably take your friend up on her offer. Any possibility of either your DH or mom getting off early to pick up the kids?

I have a 5 yo DS. We have often babysat our nieces and nephew (5 yo triplets). It actually make my day a little easier because they entertain my son and I can actually relax. Usually when we babysit it is for 5 hours plus.
If your girlfriend is willing, I would take her up on it.

I would go and have your friend sit for your kids. It is close family not like a distant cousin.

I doubt your friend would offer if she didn't want to. I know I never would offer unless I was sure about it.

I'd figure out a way to go because it's family. Many good suggestions in here. I'd probably ask if my children could come. Otherwise, see if your husband can take off or leave your kids with the friend. Then another weekend take her kids so she gets the day to herself.

Normally I'm all for bring the kids but for your sanity's sake, I'd try and leave them home. I'd tell DH to take the day or at least a half day since it's important to him.

Re: OOS Shower & Sitter Question

I would have no problems watching a friends kids for 7 hours, especially at that age. If she only has one kid, you're probably doing her a favor in that her kid will have someone other than her to play with!

I think you should go as well & let your friend watch them.
