Would this bother you? Daycare related
My daughter was sick last week and so I sent my mom to pick her up around 9:30 AM - a time we usually don't show up. My mom and my MIL do regular pickups at daycare. When my mom walked into the room, all the kids were sitting at their tables for breakfast. There was a table (like a sand table) pushed up against my DD's chair to keep her from getting up. My mother was horrified. She has worked in elementary schools for her whole career and said she would have a big problem with a teacher doing that. A little background - my DD just moved from an infant class to a toddler class. She is 18 months and the head teacher in the classroom was just promoted (she used to be an assistant in the room). I don't want to make waves about this - especially as we are new to the class and she is a new head teacher. Also, my daughter doesn't like to be constrained (getting in her car seat, putting on her shoes, changing her diapers are all now becoming impossible, whereas with everything else she is a pretty easy going kid).
I would love to get the gut reaction from other moms on this. My radar didn't go off - but I trust my mother and she doesn't overreact to things usually.

Was it keeping her chair pushed in? How was it "up against her". Was a teacher in the room when your mom walked in? I am not sure Id be too thrilled about that either... I would love to see what other moms think as well..

I would not be OK with this and I am very laid back parent. She was basically being forced to sit down and to me that is not OK

She wasn't squashed in or anything - had enough room to move around - just would not be able to get out. If this was my 3/4 year old - I would be horrified. With my 18 month old - it doesn't sit well, but we strap her into her stroller, car seat, high chair etc. I'm sure she made a huge fuss when they did it - but she was not visibly upset when my mom got there.

She wasn't squashed in or anything - had enough room to move around - just would not be able to get out. If this was my 3/4 year old - I would be horrified. IMO unless you gave them permission to do this it should have not been done.
If they want her strapped down then they should have strap seats available.
And I have a feeling this may go against NYS regulations but I could be wrong.

Was it pushed up that way on purpose or did they happen to move it for some reason just before your mom got there and that's how it appeared?

Nope - it was definitely pushed that way on purpose - my mother asked and they confirmed.

Id have no problem with it as long as she could move around in her seat. If she is supposed to be sitting, and wouldnt, then they kept her chair pushed in. She wasnt physically restrained.

ITA.... my DS is 15 months old and they all eat breakfast at a table with low chairs and the chairs have straps on them. i can't imagine that to be a respectable, let alone safe option to keep her in her chair to be eating. I wouldn't be happy either.

I worked in daycare for years and the rules always were that NYS regulations did not allow you to leave a child without direct super vision. So if she was somewhere that she wasn't able to be seen by the staff than that is against regulations. NYS also says when a child is sick they should be separated from the rest of the children in a quite place that is still within in staffs view.
As far as blocking her in that is a bit strange and you should bring them. Explain you are uncomfortable with it. It just seems to me like they were trying to keep her away from the well kids but actually blocking her in a space is very weird.

I would not be happy. If they wanted her in a controlled situation she should have been in a high chair.
When my DD was 18mos and moved to a new classroom they did not have high chairs or the like. They had those tiny mini chairs and she learned to sit in it like the other kids did. Sure probably many don't know how to sit with their crew but that's part of the point of daycare, to learn.

I wouldn't have been comfortable with that either. If your mother doesn't usually overreact to things, then I'd be bothered by it.
If they needed to keep your DD away from the other kids, she should have been in a highchair or in another area where she could be seen and comfortable. Your DD may not have seemed to be bothered by it when your mom got there but who knows what happened beforehand.

I'd just be confused. I would definitely talk to the director about it, though.
I have 2 kids in day care and I never think twice about speaking up for my children. They're babies and won't do it for themselves, so you should. You don't have to be confrontational about it, but it should be mentioned.

I am a very laid back parent but I would not like that at all. My DS is 17 months and he is all over the place. I would expect staff to manage him. If it's a real issue of her refusing to sit, then as a pp said, get her a high chair.
