This is a sad read and honestly, I was kind of depressed after reading because people live like this. The whole mountain dew in the bottle, so damn sad.

This IS sad. I saw something else recently about some towns in West Virginia. The poverty there was staggering. Apparently it was due to the coal industry drying up there.
I couldn't believe the way these people lived - it was like a 3rd wold country....right in the US.

Yes. It is extremely sad. 3rd world country right here in the US is what I've said about these types of towns too. It's heartbreaking.
Anyone aware of the best charities for within the US ?
I have a friend who was able to give me a list of reputable breast cancer charities a few years ago. I'd like the same for feeding / clothing the hungry as well.

That is very sad.
Unfortunately his policies won't help them, though.
We actually manufacture MORE today than we ever have - we just do it with less people and better technology.
They need education and training to be able to work the new jobs of today.

And as he fills his transition team with lobbyists and wall street execs where will these people fit in? It is indeed very sad and I wish I had the slightest faith that the next 4 years would help these people but I fear they will continue to be forgotten and hurting.

He promised to bring back coal. That is not happening. He promised to bring jobs back from overseas. That is not happening. He should have been talking to these people about job training instead of blowing smoke up their asses.
These are the people that will be hurt the most by his tax plan. That's not a partisan comment, it is the truth. Lower income families receive next to no tax cuts from his proposed plan.

I heard an interview with coal miners this morning too. Their livelihood from generations is gone. Many are dems that voted for him. They put all their faith and trust in him and lets pray and hope he doesn't let them down.

I have to agree with MrsMick.
Although those of us who dont like Trump and his people have to stay vigilant, informed and make calls, we cannot be so negative and not have any faith that something will change for these people. Something positive has to happen!

Coal is a dying industry. Doesn't matter who is president. And jobs like Apple and Carrier are not coming back here, unless people are prepared to pay $1000 for an iphone.
Same reason that Trump makes all his crap overseas or in Mexico. He knows how the game is played. So spare me the "he isn't sworn in yet" garbage. No presidential candidate would be able to do these things.

It's incredibly sad and to say third world country conditions right here in the U.S. is right. I was reading something this morning along the same lines that touched on the fact that these are very small, very rural areas that depended on that one manufacturing plant, factory, coal industry, etc. to employ the whole community... college attendance rates are ower than they historically were for these areas. The only options they possibly have is maybe one Walmart in town that killed all smaller businesses and pays peanuts if they're even lucky to have one at all to employ them. There's maybe one doctor in the whole town. There is an extreme lack of adequate medical services. They feel abandoned by politicians on both sides of the aisle as efforts are focused on major cities. Along came Donald and they felt like he spoke directly to their struggle. I will agree with needing change. I just don't feel he is the one to champion for change. I will also agree that he made some unrealistic far-fetched promises and a focus should be on getting this workforce's skills up to date on modern industry and technology. All we can do now is hope he takes his job seriously and does come through for them and the nation as a whole... without getting us killed in the process.

I had already read this and agreed with much of it. This article shows that being white is NOT an automatic privilege for everyone. Being white means nothing for many and does not improve their life and daily struggles . To think white equates privilege for all is blatant racism. Who fights for these people? Who makes these lost people their cause in life? No one, not one celebrity or historical figure. They are trapped in their towns and their lives. That's why Trump won and racism was not the reason. For many they felt it was a chance at someone hearing them. Will Trump do that? Who knows, time shall tell. But Hillary sure as hell was not going to benefit them in any way.

I agree. There is a better chance of him doing these things, than Hillary. So naturally the vote went to Trump.
