Question for special Ed teachers (also posted on special needs board)

Hi, I had assumed my child with special needs would need to be placed in a district 75 class for K. However both his teacher and ABA therapist think he can do well in a 12:1:1 in his community school. I am just wondering will he have to be potty trained? Not sure if that's a reasonable goal. Thanks!

Re: Question for special Ed teachers (also posted on special needs board)

Thanks, I understand that is true for typical children attending school, but that can't possibly be true for special Ed students, can it? I know many ASD kids, etc, who didn't train until 7 or later. Also kids with cerebral palsy for example can be smart as a whip but may never have the dexterity to use the restroom alone. Right now he is 4, he has cerebral palsy and mild autism. I just think it would be a shame if he couldn't attend an otherwise appropriate classroom because of something he can't realistically do, physically. any NYC special Ed teachers that can weigh in? Thanks for all replies!

Eta - saw your other response about the aid. I was told he wouldn't need one, but maybe they forgot he wasn't trained...

I would call them and ask and point out that he is not potty trained. They probably did forget. It's highly unlikely that the general class aide in a 12:1:1 would be able to leave the class to change diapers. I would ask about a 1:1 aide for this reason.

He would need a one on one aid. In my district there are multiple levels of special needs and self contained classrooms. There is one classroom in the district that does accommodate children with a teacher and each child has their own aid for these types of needs. These children are non verbal, with CP and autism. There are less than twelve kids in that class. I am in NJ and see the class come in from recess/outdoor play time just before I pick up my kids.

The school I was in had a changing room with a changing table for the special needs kids that weren't potty trained yet. Also, my mother in law was a special ed kindergarten teacher and she had quite a few that weren't trained yet. They all had aides to help them with that. These are both public schools on Long Island.
