Do you maintain valid passports for your family?

With all of the uncertainty right now I can't help but to think of doomsday scenerios. Do you maintain active passports for your family for safety purposes? Heaven forbid nuclear attack, disaster, medical emergency, or situations you have to get your family out of the country quickly is it a thing to always maintain valid passports? I am thinking I getting for my children and updating my own even though we have no plans to leave the country at this time.

Yes, we all have passports. But we have them because we've traveled outside the U.S. for vacation. Frankly, I'd make sure we had them not for some emergency, but in case we found a great vacation deal somewhere! I wouldn't want to pass it up because we wouldn't be able to get passports in time.

Do you maintain valid passports for your family?

DH has one. I need to update mine I never changed it after I got married and mine expires in 2017 anyway. I plan to renew it soon. When you have a newborn- how do they get one? After my twins arrive I plan to get them one... we are planning a trip to London so DH can go to a Jacksonville game overseas

Yes, we keep them current because we travel internationally. We do not have them for safety or so that we can flee the country.

I'm renewing mine now and getting one for my DD (5). But this is for travel purposes, not safety.

Re: Do you maintain valid passports for your family?

The process is so annoying so mine is probably lapsed. I really don't travel.
Never got one for DD because it's a PIA and we don't need one.
If there were actually a nuclear attack I don't think a passport would help you much

Yes, but we travel fairly often. We had gotten one for my older DD when she was a few months old and we just got one for my 6 month old a few weeks ago and it was very quick/easy. Just filled out the form and made an appointment at the post office and they take the picture right there. That was pretty much it! And we got it super fast, probably two weeks later.

Yes, DH, DD (2 y/o) and I all have passports, but we only have them because we travel. Never thought of it for reasons you mentioned.

Do you maintain valid passports for your family?

DH and mine are current although his expires next year. First thing I thought of when I saw this thread was that I should get for the kids in case we need to escape.

We all have current passports. My mom is Canadian so we travel to Canada frequently. DD got her passport when she was 2 months old.

Ours expire within 6 months actually... but we travel a lot so we will be renewing soon regardless. My daughter has had hers since she was 8 months old... for the pp who asked, we had the post office take her pic so we knew it was done properly.

Same. It's me, DH and 2 kids.

Keep them current for travel though, not for safety.

This, though mine and DH's are not expired.

If there were a nuclear attack we can't exactly hop in our cars and show up at the airport to go....where?

I'm also pretty sure no other countries want us.

Yeah, God forbid we have any disaster, we are never getting off of this Island, let alone out of the country! Have you ever driven during rush hour on a Friday???

Or at any hour on the Belt pkwy or any bridge out of NY?
I say it all the time as we are stuck in traffic- we are doomed if anything ever happens. There is no way out

Re: Do you maintain valid passports for your family?

I always have a valid passport and so does DH.
We travel out of the country every year and just in case we do a last minute vacation we are prepared and don't have to scramble to get a renewal.

I let my EU passport lapse, but have been thinking about renewing it Chat Icon

It's pretty easy. You can get the application from the post office or online here . The website will also list the documents you need (child's birth certificate, parent IDs, etc.). They will take the passport photo at the post office. Both parents must be there in person when applying for the passport.

Also, not all post offices offer passport services but you can check online. You should also call ahead and ask about appointments.
