another bronx zoo question
we have never been (i went as a kid, but not in the last 10 years at least) and are planning to next week, ... how long does it take to walk around and see everything? the map makes it look very large. we are planning on spending as much time as necessary, is it doable in 1 day? more? less?

You really can't do it in one day. Pick a few areas to prioritize and then see what else you can squeeze in.

I usually spend about 4 hours and see a few exhibits. It's huge though.

its huge...not sure you can do it in one day...our most recent trip there we covered Asia (did Camel Ride), Butterfly Garden, Bug Carousel, sea lions. We saw the animals in between on our walk (Tigers, Giraffes, Zebras, etc..) I think we spent maybe 3-4 hours there. Kids (ages 2 & 5) were exhausted after that and we had the double stroller.

Re: another bronx zoo question
We go often... Highlight the stuff you are interested in. My favorites are: Butterfly garden Carousel 4D movie (Rio) Giraffes Children zoo Sea lions Congo Tigers With lunch... It's a long day, but doable I usually leave out either Congo or children zoo ETA: We do without stroller for the older (4&5). We do take breaks for food, movie & carousel (all sitting). We are members, so we go A LOT!

We are season pass holders so we hit all the zoos. Bronx zoo is an all day affair for us and we bring both the stroller and wagon for one kid as we back a cooler so the cooler usually rides around in the stroller.

Re: another bronx zoo question
agree with other posters. We are members and go often so we usually do multiple shorter trips throughout the year.. 3-4 hours. Wear comfortable shoes. I can't believe what I see some people walking around in. Heels... flat shoes with no support. I never understand it lol. Lots of walking. We are there before they open.. I find that first 1.5 hours to be the best before it starts to get really crowded.

If you plan to go at least twice in a year I think its worth it. It includes parking which is extra, the carousel which is extra, 4D movie is extra, and the butterfly garden. I believe the congo exhibit as well. Plus you get a discount on food and souvenirs.

Re: another bronx zoo question
We have the membership but we do... Monorail Jungle world Congo Giraffes 4D movie Butterflies Reptiles Carousel If the kids are not tired by then we will add Childrens Zoo Madagascar Sea lions
Surprised I don't see people suggestions get the monorail since it is the first thing the kids want to do every trip.
You can't really do it in a day even if you get there at opening and stay through closing, but you can do 80-90% if you stay all day. We go from 10 to about 3-4 and can do basically the list above.

Yes it includes Central Park zoo, queens and prospect zoos, as well as the aquarium in Brooklyn.
The Bronx zoo family premium membership includes unlimited parking ($16-a few years ago you only got 4 parking passes so unlimited is nice).
It includes unlimited admission to: the monorail Tram Jungle world Butterflies Carousel Childrens zoo Congo4D movie
The camel rides are not included...but are the only paid item now that is not.
You also get 10% off food and a discount at the stores.

Re: another bronx zoo question
We went a couple of years ago and made a rookie mistake...we just winged it not realizing how huge it was and missed seeing the animals DS wanted to see. I would say try to map out what you want to see because it's hard to bang it out in one day.

Kids start paying at 3 years old. They are not very age-checking. Before my kids were a solid 3 years old, I used to get the individual membership (it used to be under $100) & kids would be free. With 1 paying kid, you need to go twice a year to break even (ignoring the tax deduction).

Re: another bronx zoo question
The membership is wonderful. DS is now 6 and we've had it for a few years. We max the number of children allowed and makes for great playdates! He has friends who have never gone and we're able to treat them and their parent.
The monorail is our family favorite and a must see if you haven't been in a while. We went in the late fall/early winter and it was closed for the season, it was a major letdown - but completely understandable.

Re: another bronx zoo question
We went 2 weeks ago with my 2.5 year old. It is BIG, we were there for about 4 hours and definitely did NOT do everything. We prioritized the animals we knew DS wanted to see, and the fun stuff like the Carousel, and the Children's Zoo (which he loved because he likes the more interactive stuff).

With the season pass when we are bored on the weekend we just hop in the car and go to the zoo. Queens zoo is my favorite and next is Prospect park. They are both small and my 3 year old loves them.

Re: another bronx zoo question
We went 2 weeks ago. We spent 6 hours there(!!!) and still didn't see everything. I will say that it's a good idea to start at the Monorail. That was the largest time suck b/c the line gets pretty long for it. We were there before noon and had a 45 minute wait. By the time we got off the line was even longer, so probably an hour wait.

another bronx zoo question
We have the membership (third year we have done it) and it pays for itself in 2 visits. We always get there 20 minutes before the zoo opens and start with the monorail - its our first agenda item. We did it this past weekend and we were literally the first persons on the line. Which was good, because by the time we got off the line was super long and it was not even 1045 (the monorail starts running at 1030).
We then hit the 4D movie and Butterfly house, did lunch and then the children's zoo, followed by the Sea Lions and Congo. On the way to each we saw all the zebras, giraffes, lions, bears, monkeys. We typically don't go past the tigers - which I believe is mostly birds. So we manage to get in a lot in one day. We leave around 3 pm.
