I have both. I love the backpack (Vera Bradley)because with 2 kids it's way easier to carry. On the other hand it doesn't hold as much as my arm (carters) one. My arm one has a ton of pockets and it's easier to find things in it. The backpack I sometimes feel like I'm digging in a hole to find things. So I guess it depends on what's more important to you.

I like arm that also has a long strap for crossbody. This way I can throw it quickly on my arm, or for a longer or heavier trek, I can have it crossbody and have hands free. I'm not a backpack fan in general.
I love my lesportsac.

i have both
i use the backpack when we are going somewhere and all i need are diapers/wipes and sippy cups (a child's birthday party, playground, museum, quick errand)
I have a larger one for the shoulder that is filled with toys/entertainment for the kids in addition to the necessities
edited to add: neither one of them are actual diaper bags...the backpack is just an old backpack we had from traveling and the large one is a vera Bradly tote-i believe its the carried away bag)

Backpack all the way!!! I have 4 different ones and now I use a regular Nike backpack that is not a diaper bag.

I had a shoulder bag for DD, but I stopped using it by a year. Now, I just throw a few diapers and a to go wipes case in my purse.
