ongoing fever

My 3yo DD is on her 5th day of having a fever. I've been giving her Motrin every 6 hours. As soon as the last dose of Motrin is wearing off her fever starts to spike. I've been to the dr twice. They tested her for the flu and strep twice. Both negative. Ears and chest are clear. She has some nasal congestion and post nasal drip. they think it's just viral but 5 days of a fever is not typical for her. The most she has ever gone is 3 days. Anyone else deal with an ongoing fever? I'm getting concerned that it's something else. Thanks.

Re: ongoing fever

My DD has a virus last year that just had to run its course, similar to what you're describing only it lasted EIGHT days straight of VERY high fevers. (103-104) I was piggybacking Motrin and Tylenol the entire time because if I didn't her fevers would spike like crazy...........she needed the Tylenol to keep the fever down enough to get through to the next dose of Mortin. The meds didn't eliminate her fevers, just kept them down enough so she wasn't completely miserable.

She was tested for flu and strep twice (all negative) and even had bloodwork done to rule anything else out. Ears and lungs were also all clear. It was just a really knock out virus that had to clear up on it's own. Finally on the 9th day the fevers broke and went away and she began to feel so much better soon after.

Hang in there, piggyback the meds, and make sure she's comfortable............it's all you can do. Hope your LO feels better real soon! Chat Icon

UTI? You can have them recheck her ears. DD had 4 days of fevers and on day 3, showed no ear infection. It was there on day 4.

I'd have her checked for UTI and have ears checked again. Sometimes ears develop after....

Both of my boys- 3 and 6, had a fever virus last month that lasted 6 full days and ended with a little congestion and cough. No other symptoms. This was very unusual for them as well. They both missed a week of school. Ugh! Good luck. Hopefully it will break soon.

I do agree with having her checked for a UTI, if she hasn't been already, but my DD had this in the fall. Almost a week of spiking very high fevers at night, no other symptoms. Strep negative, UTI negative, ears, lungs clear...just viral. Hope she feels better soon!

Re: ongoing fever

i brought her to the doctor again yesterday. They said she has bronchitis and started an antibiotic. She is already doing better. Thank you all for your responses.

@Elizarags- I don't post much but I've followed your post from the beginning and like so many on here, I think about what you and Lila are going though everyday. You are handling it remarkably well and Lila is lucky to have a mommy like you. I hope you guys are home and back to normal very soon.
