ER trip

This stomach bug sucks. Little man was fine when I dropped him off this morning and then I get a call that he vomited a ton. I picked him up and he hasn't kept anything down all day, not even pedialyte.... So here we are at the ER with the little man. Not happy that we are here, but just want to get some fluid in my baby boy. I'm sure he'll be fine in just a few hours, but I hate this. Haven't been in the hospital with him since he was in the NICU when he was born. And honestly, wishing our peds were affiliated with Cohen's and not Winthrop, I like the separate children's ER better.

Can't you go to any ER? I thought insurance covered ER services the same as it's an emergency visit.
Eta: I'm asking because I've always planned to go to an ER where my Ped isn't affiliated (but a better hospital)

ER trip

I go to Good Sam even though I know my Ped isn't affiliated. Its closer for me otherwise I would be driving all the way to Cohens. For something more serious I would probably make the drive but for stitches, Stomach bug, Croup i'd go close.

You can. You don't have to go to an ER at a hospital your ped is affiliated with you just have to make sure your insurance covers that hospital.

For a while my insurance was in a dispute with Stonybrook and we couldn't use it. (we can now, it's been resolved).

But you can chose any hospital ER your insurance covers. No need for your ped to have rights there.

You can - our pediatrician actually sent us last week to an ER they were not affiliated with since they felt we would receive better care.

Hope he's feeling better - I know it's late but, I would try something like Pedialyte or Gatorade - it's hard to keep just plain water down during a stomach virus.

Yeah we had tried that :-/ it sucked! He was on an IV for a few hours, it took a long time for him to give urine, so I know he was pretty dehydrated. We went where our ped was affiliated because it makes it easier if he gets admitted. That said, you can go anywhere. The staff was really awesome, from what I understand it wasn't just Winthrop last night. Our friends told us Cohen's was a madhouse as well.

Thanks all! We got home around 8, he's been sleeping on and off, drinking pedialyte when he wakes up. He is still pretty miserable. I feel so bad for him.
