moms with toddlers that bite -NEW question
Anyone been through a biting phase with their toddler? Do you mind sharing about how long it lasted and how old they were when it stopped?
Thanks for all the replies. It's not actually my child biting; my children are getting bitten at daycare. I was trying to see how long this has lasted for others. Right now we are going on month 4 of my kids getting bitten (and other kids getting bitten too) from this one child. I don't want them to kick him out as one of you mentioned, but I'm just wondering how you handled it if your child bit at daycare? It seems the child is biting one of my kids once a week and last week another child was bitten one day and my child the following day so it seems to be a common occurrence. I've never said anything to his parents because I know it's something that really can't be helped. but I also don't know how to help my kids out because they don't want to play with him and I have a hard time telling them they should

Re: moms with toddlers that bite
DD2 is just emerging from a biting phase. She is 18 months. Probably lasted a few months (how soon we forget!). I tried everything and honestly it just took time for it to stop. Good luck!

moms with toddlers that bite
My friends child was recently kicked out of daycare for excessive biting. She was around 20mos but grew out of it before 2. She's the sweetest thing ever too and wasn't doing it to hurt, but more when she was excited. Doctors told my friend it's a sign of intelligence!

My DS bit at daycare twice (21 months). I haven't heard anything about it since. They are very diligent about watching the kids. The lead teacher said its normal and not to stress about it. If it continued, I was going to get him a book about biting.

My ds was a biter from about 1 to 18 months. Just like pp said only out of excitement, not anger. He would bite so hard that he broke the skin on me and my dh. We would just tell him how much it hurt and that we don't bite, but I think its just something they need to grow out of.

Re: moms with toddlers that bite
My DD would bite for protection (usually her big brother). It lasted quite a while (months) & was gone before 2. DS usually deserved it. She would chase him, baring her teeth. At 2, a little girl bit her and my DD exclaimed "my mama says no biting". So, she did understand all along! The mother was horrified, but I laughed. At 4, this girl is precious. She's the kindest child I've ever met (honestly). She's smart & gentle. Other moms, teachers & friends swoon over her. Don't worry, it doesn't predict anything!

This was exactly us. Daycare teachers kept telling us he had a problem and to get him services. The truth is that some kids do this unfortunately, and it will stop. My son is a model student now.

The daycare should be handling it. They need to shadow the child if necessary. It's a liability if they do not address it.
I would speak to the director about it asap. You should not have to wait it out.

Yup. Talk to the director immediately. They need to shadow that kid. When I worked at daycare we shadowed one particular kid. We out an extra teacher in that classroom to be sure someone was always in him. It still happens. Utah less frequently

They should be shadowing the student. DS has been bit 4x times since November - once was justified as he pulled a girl's hair ripping out a large chunk. They do an excellent job shadowing all biters. They two times he bit, the main daycare lady was out. She is amazing at catching them before they do it since she knows what to look for. Biting is normal toddler behavior, but if your child is being bit consistently then your daycare needs to do a better job monitoring the behavior.

Re: moms with toddlers that bite -NEW question
I haven't read the other replies, but if there's a repeat occurrence of the biting, then the child should be shadowed. Obviously the school knows that this child is becoming a liability, so they need to put resources on him/her. I'd speak with the director ASAP and let her know your concerns.
