Fever after major surgery! Nurses please come in!

What is protocol if an adult has a fever after major surgery? 36 hours post op. I know I can google, but that often result in worst case scenario and not reality! Thanks!!!

I'm not a nurse but when I had a fever after surgery my discharge papers said to go to the ER if it went above x number. I would at least call the doctor. Feel better.

Look at your discharge instructions. It probably says in case of fever, call your doctor. It could potentially be a post-op infection among other things so your surgeon should be made aware.

Not a nurse but I believe you have to inform your dr asap. I know after my c sections if I developed a fever I was told to call dr. Good luckChat Icon

Thanks everyone! Patient is still in hospital, but I was just curious of others experiences.

It also depends on the type of surgery. Sometimes a low grade fever 24-36 hours post op means they need to ambulated more and continue their coughing and deep breathing exercises. ESP if this was any type of surgery where it may hurt to take deep breaths, the smaller parts of the lungs aren't expanding they way they should as a result of more shallow breathing and this could potentionally lead to pneumonia. I can't tell you exactly but if they are in the hospital that's a good thing. Sometimes all it is is doing that breathing and getting out of bed. Good luck!!

I ran a fever for a few days after double knee replacement surgery but did not have an infection.
I don't remember the reason why, I was pretty out of it from all the meds.
It was gone by day 4 and I got transferred to rehab.

Ran a fever a day after knee surgery. Had to return to the hospital for fluid for a few hours over night.

I'm a nurse. Depends how high the fever is and if the white blood count is elevated. Like someone said the patient might need to ambulate more often and use the incentive spirometer. A lot of times they watch first before just giving antibiotics.
