Re: Can someoen with Newsday online post this article? Man in Syosett: Fake cop with weapons
A Syosset man who pretended to be a federal air marshal was arrested Thursday after an investigation by federal officers and local police found him to be in possession not only of false identification credentials — but a loaded assault rifle, pistol, knife, ballistic body armor and a tactical vest containing three high-capacity ammo magazines, police said.
Mark Vicars, 49, of 137 The Knolls, was arrested after a traffic stop on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset at about 7:40 a.m. Thursday during which he activated emergency lights on his 2014 Dodge Durango and produced “a fraudulent shield and identification credentials” that identified him as an air marshal, Nassau County police said.
The stop was conducted by Special Investigation Squad detectives in joint operation with the New York office of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Transportation Security Administration, police said. ?DataLI crime stats “At this time we don’t see any immediate threat to the public” or a connection to terrorism, but that is under investigation, Nassau County police Det. The Nassau County police Major Case Bureau said a search warrant executed at the man’s home led to the seizure of “multiple weapons,” as well as about 8,300 rounds of ammunition.
No one was injured, police said.
Police said Vicars was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 10 counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, five counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. He faces arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
It was not immediately clear how long Vicars had been under investigation by federal and local authorities.
