Daycare related- pickup time
Is it normal to combine classrooms at the end of the day as children and staff go home? Say, a 16 month old who is in the 12-18 month old class being moved into the 18-24 months classroom for the last bit of the day?

Yes, it saves money if they don't have to keep every teacher there. I don't love it - but if the alternative is to increase the cost - I am all for it.

Yes as long as they are still in ratio and no more than a certain age range apart (which is a pretty broad age range I believe). It allows them to consolidate to send staff members home (which you'd think would save us some money, lol).

It happens at my daycare. The infant 1 and 2 rooms get combined. Sometimes they'll also move kids between toddler and infant to keep the ratios appropriate. I'm not sure what they do for the older kids. They usually combine rooms around 4:30-5 when their numbers are low.

Yes. Usually preschool and pre-k are combined, toddler and twaddler, etc. If I remember correctly they have to combine with the next room up, so they can't combine toddlers and pre-k.

Thanks all. When my boys were in daycare we always picked up by 4 so I never even knew they did this. My friend has a 16 month old DD who started in daycare in September, and she was picked up later than usual on Wed night- 5:30, and she was picked up from the 18-24 month old room, and a couple of 2 year olds were in the room as well. They were within legal ratios and it was only 7 kids in total. She was just surprised that her 16 month old who just started walking was in a with 2 year olds.

Yup they do that at DD's daycare too. They also do that early in the morning.

Her DC will most likely be moved up to the toddler room soon (at 18 months) so it's good that he/she is meeting the other kids and teachers.
ETA: my DS is transitioning to the toddler room now - he just turned 18 months. The next youngest kid in his room is 2.

They do that at my day care also. My son actually loves it when the older kids are added to the room

My son started in September in a 18 month -2.5 year old room. He was only 16 months. I actually preferred this over the other option I considered which was a school which was going to put him in the 0-18 month old room for only 2 months. But maybe because my guy has been walking since 9 months and has an older 7 year old brother I preferred this.

My DD goes to a home daycare but they run an after-school program. So when DH picks her up there are some older kids there too.
